As you say very chalk and cheese!
Considering a UK tour in July/August with the aim of visiting family and friends and seeing some places not before visited.
Anyway one possibility is a stay in York.
Rowntree has just one free night, any pitch type, in the whole two months.
Beechwood has pitches free the whole two months except for one night!

Our long trip north is to see family, there's a what's it law that says they'll probably come down here anyway but our trip is booked for May with lots of stop offs in places we like. Much was booked a long time ago to ensure we could travel if things opened up.

What you are saying is the shorter the lead time of the booking the more chance is that it will be honoured, That is exactly what I am saying when I don't book until I am sure I can go. Of course you cannot be sure of all circumstances to preventeven attendance. Even if if you book the day before, there is always the posibility of a breakdown.
My veiw is many book just in case they can go rather than having a firm commitment. There is no disincentive to do otherwise.

Last November we got organised. Re booked Marazion for September after cancelling it because event we were going to see was cancelled and we went North rather than to Cornwall to avoid the Lemmings hurtling down there like they had just discovered the Promised Land.
Then as Covid struck again in December deep and hard, we realised that it was going to be yet another year similar to last year, with millions who usually go overseas or holiday in a different way, turning to caravans, MHs and tents, all in the UK. So I booked another three Club Site locations from April onwards, just to ensure we had somewhere to go, doing our sort of thing, as soon as things re opened, it felt safe enough to go. I have cancelled one already, purely because having more time to get organised, and booking a holiday cottage means that I no longer want it. I did change the dates of this Site later into July, but even more research showed me that I needn’t have worried, their are pitches of the type we like, at a much better price out there. I have yet to cancel the Club Site, but it’s still got three and a half months to run yet. But I will do it later today. Moreton in the Marsh, mid July for almost a week if anyone is interested.
The Club are highlighting this no deposit, cancel without any penalty as one of its unique selling points, and this year it’s never been more welcome. It’s not dishonest, it’s not against any rules, and the Club knows that some Member, from somewhere, will snap up a prized pitch, at a popular Club Site, before the due dates. It might not be the original Member who booked, but it might be another who drops on something that suits them, having missed out booking as early as we did. It’s how the Club works nowadays, and it works very well. Someone else’s cancellation, is another Member’s bonus. 😁

I'm sure you know the difference between immoral and dishonest, PD. Methinks the keyboard may have run ahead of rationality of thought.
I sense a little back pedalling now and divergence but you have still not accepted that it is not possible to book before being absolutely certain of being able to go.

The stress!!! ,why not book the whole week as you want with the very flexible system this club has if you do not "like?" where you are you could try? to find a non electric pitch on other sites then cancel the days left where you have a confirmed booking

Being as your booking is much later in the season ,i would expect cancellations by a few , as oft posted on here , many members are of the older generation, and many like us book sites hoping to go ,but then one never knows what will come along to alter those bookings

We don’t usually book anything ahead (unless for a specific event), but tour on a whim, even in Summer. So our usual touring plans are being seriously compromised. But these are not normal times, so we have used our initiative and got organised.
I am of absolutely no doubt that if by some miracle the World suddenly got better, and overseas travel was reinstated, the cancellations for holidays in this country would be unprecedented. I wouldn’t be calling all those who cancelled dishonest, or immoral. Just making a choice.0 -
Could it be that as the DG stated some months ago "come the 12th April it will be like a cork out of a bottle with many waiting to go"
And although toilet/showers that are not for families.and bubbles use must stay shut ,it seems some organisations? will be ignoring that instruction? (profits first?)

They are very different AD. Nunnykirk is possibly the Club’s most rural site. It’s deep in moorland, all grass pitches, about as far removed from today’s rows of hardstanding, big facility block as you could get. It’s a throwback Site harking from early days, when folks who toured managed without much more than a truly lovely location, peace and quiet, yet nice little towns and villages not far away. We love it, but you have to know what to expect. Powburn (River Breamish) is another nice location, but more hardstandings, facility block, very popular. Again a lovely rural location on edge of a village. Berwick is busy, very popular, and a train every half hour thundering past. But still nice. Kielder? Never been to Site, too many midges for me, but glorious location.
Northumberland is usually a haven in the Summer. Stunning beaches, lots of history and things to see, but it was extremely busy in places like Bamburgh, Seahouses, Berwick last year. Inland is quieter, different sort of beauty.

Its quite interesting to compare bookings at the Caravan Club and the Camping Club. Caravan Club full in many places, right through to August in some cases. Camping Club, which requires a £25 deposit, still has places on many sites. Could this be a measure of how serious site bookers are? If you can book for free how many " just in case " reservations does the Caravan Club currently have?

......or could it be a measure of people preferring the CAMC sites to C&CC offerings? We'll never know. Nor will we ever know which club ultimately filled the most pitches on the night.

What about another way of looking at it? the membership of either club and one that is tents orientated (no facilities) also I agree £25 deposit does boost the ccc coffers,
we have been menbers of the ccc in the past
As i posted earlier as we get older and on pensions to have a confirmed bookings is less stressfull ,than the posibility of spending many pounds on ccc bookings for the same confirmation .that could be lost IF we cannot take the booking up

Interesting! can't imagine anything more boring than to compare bookings between two clubs, and then to make assumptions on the reason why. I suppose this pandemic gives some the time to think up new ideas on how to fill their time.
Plan ahead, get the sites you want and if the 'Gov' allows it then all's good. Late doers are losers.

I wonder how many others don't play the game and move on elsewhere at a loss to the Club
I assume you mean how many just don't turn up - no shows I think they are called. There is no need to wonder those statistics are given out by the club and they are very low. And remember the no shows went down significantly when deposits were removed and therefore allowing those pitches to be taken up by someone else, just like you're doing now.
Also don't forget it is monitored and three such no shows and you could be asked to leave.

"What you are saying is the shorter the lead time of the booking the more chance is that it will be honoured"
I don't think I was saying that at all, actually, although I guess it's correct in as much as " the shorter the lead time" the less chance of something unexpected cropping up which might lead one to cancel for entirely genuine reasons. But then, if they are genuine reasons, what's the problem?

Maybe because their booking was done up to a year ago?

Why are folks indulging in amateur speculation is my question? Both Clubs will have dedicated Marketing Departments, paid a lot of money to look at resources, analyse bookings and trends, and then make factually based decisions on how best to provide what it’s Members (the majority) want, as well as maximising potential income for the Clubs? No Member of either Club (well bar one, who imagines he is 😉) has all the information available to give a definitive answer to some of the questions posed on here. All Members can do is speculate, derive personal opinions from tiny bits of public information, or even indulge in making things up if it so suits their requirements🤷♀️
Not a personal comment at you by the way JD, just a general point about many of the comments made on this thread. 🙂
