Today I was surprised to find booking slots available during week days in the county we wish to stay, not to far, but far enough to have a break. So have booked 3 nights at Exmoor house and even managed to obtain a booking for a fully serviced pitch. Fingers crossed the site will open on the 12th...
Pitches are available, I think you just need to be a bit more forgiving with where to stay.

Similar experience trying to book the end of May Bank Holiday week at Coed y Llyn. It took me a fortnight of looking every day but I finally picked up the whole week including the weekends at each end in odd days where people frequently cancel.

AD and LTC, tt says a lot about the honesty of Club members. Just checked the site I am booked on where I could not get a full week, I can now but I will wait until I am on site before I decide wheather I stay or move on. If the weather forecast is good I tend to think I will move on to a cheaper site offering non electric pitches.

That is one of its big advantages. Although you cancel with the other club, (cancelled due to second covid jab) I could even have had my deposit back if I wanted, although I used it for another booking. However, it did take 10 minutes on the phone and another 28p off the credit card as the deposit was insufficient.😂

And of course the whole system works well and to the advantage of both members and the club?

Cancelations could be for many legitimate reasons PD. Until the 17th May because folk don’t want to use their own facilities. Second covid jab or revised servicing date required to maintain warranty, as in our case.

Are you suggesting dishonesty, PD, or have I misunderstood because I can't see anything dishonest going on at all?

Have used club sites, but tend not to now, mainly because i do like an onsite pool with a health spa if possible which you dont get on many club sites, so normally have to pay a deposit or sometimes in full depending on when booking a commercial site, but dont recall ever losing a deposit.
Bet the club are looking at the way they run bookings now, a £10 deposit could be quite a revenue earner, better in their bank than in yours

It simples TW, I don't book until I am sure I can go. The lead times some are using for bookings, it is impossible to be honest as to whether you can honour it or not. No doubt lack of facilities has made some difference right now but is it really sufficient excuse to cancel a booking?

Well we do book well ahead PD with the firm intention of taking them and make no apology for that. In fact the current bookings were transferred from last year when they were cancelled by covid and that included those we had paid deposits for. As to your last point, of course it’s sufficient reason if you wanted or need to use them rather than your own. We are happy to use are own, not everyone is, it’s a personal choice.

"The lead times some are using for bookings, it is impossible to be honest as to whether you can honour it or not. "
agree with this statement, i for one as we left a site in Devon Sept 2020 booked the same site same pitch for the whole of Sept 21, simply because we did not think that going overthere would be possible/sensible and had an incline that pitches on sites in the UK would be difficult to find.
When we booked we had no idea whether we would be able to take up this booking or not, we paid £30 deposit and £10 for insurance, if we were to loose the lot then so be it, but right now it looks to have been a good investment

Yes it is reason for cancellation. At the point of booking it's likely no one knew what conditions would prevail.
No way is cancelling bookings dishonest. I have 2 which I might well cancel nearer the time but, when I booked, I had every intention of honouring them. How is that dishonest? Also, you know full well it is not possible to wait until we are absolutely sure we can go before booking because that would be on the day.
I think it is only 'simples' in your view, PD, as there is no dishonesty involved in cancelling bookings within the T&Cs. You may feel some folk act immorally but that is not the same as dishonesty.

sorry PD but that doesn't answer or explain your original post:

Nothing to do with honouring a booking and the honesty you are now talking about is in the future? it is impossible to be honest as to whether you can honour it or not
is it really sufficient excuse to cancel a booking?
Under club booking procedures no reason is needed at all for cancelling a booking (one is asked but that does not stop the cancellation). To me everyone has that right and I'm not bothered what it is so I'm puzzled as to why you should ask that question?
Why are you bothered and checking the changes in daily/weekly availability and even posting that you will be reporting back after your stay to see if the site will fill up? I've asked already what are you trying to prove to yourself or us? You've got your booking just enjoy it?

Well done and glad you are happy, but it's not a game I would play.

Nor me. I'm not devoted to club sites to that degree so I'd go elsewhere. Each to their own, eh?

I made several attempts to get consecutive days at Hawes, in the end I gave up, we'll just have a stop over there (we've been before) and we'll now spend a few days on a nice CL further south. After all my efforts I'm now looking forward to the CL more than Hawes! Some sites are very busy but there are lots of others which aren't and personally I think they might prove to be better than ones which are crowded....unless you want to feel like a sardine?!

Ok so it was down to the choice of words. It is my view and I make no apologies and also agree with eurotraveller. I wonder how many others don't play the game and move on elsewhere at a loss to the Club, some even take it to an extreme and leave the Club.
Oh and the road map was published a long time ago so why didn't members who cannot manage without facilities cancel long ago?

Brue, try the CL at Jervaulx Abbey. It does get busy, but you never know👍 You will love it, gorgeous location, and the Abbey itself is just across the road. It does have loos, but doubt they will be open. But tea room might be doing takeaway😋

It just might have had something to do with the statement on the club website, saying they were awaiting clarification on if they could open.🤔

Ah TDA, we did that one last year and can recommend it. We're ok this time round, nice CL down in Worcs. We're doing a loop NW, NE then crossing over for SW...trying to avoid the gruelling A1/M prefer the M5 (if you can prefer any motorways. )

Good documentary on BBC2 last night re the horror of Covid around the world , right now i think we should be very concerned about leaving our shores and concentate on keeping safe at home, if this means it is difficult to book UK sites etc, then so be it, after all we all have the choice, stay at home, or face some minor inconvenience when trying to find a site within the UK, personally I have not had any difficulty in finding a site in the UK, and I am sure there are much worse sites than Rooksbury Park out there

"It simples TW, I don't book until I am sure I can go."
I don't follow the logic of that statement, PD. Surely that means you can only book on the day you intend to go. You say you already have a booking (which can't be until Monday 12th at the earliest). You may fully intend to go but how can you be sure that nothing will happen between then and now to stop you? In that sense, lead time is irrelevant surely, 1 week, 1 month or longer?
