London LEZ discount for Private HGV's
Hi Club Members
I have started a petition to the Mayor of London for a discount on the daily LEZ charge payable for larger Motor Homes.
Please do all you can to ensure all members sign to give us a fair deal.
Thank you

One has to wonder whether the LEZ is suitable terrain for larger MH's anyway. My daughter, who lives within the LEZ is faced with replacing their elderly diesel estate car this year because of the legislation.

Fossil fuelled vehicles are being phased out completely. Folk within cities are suffering health issues due to combusted pollution I really doubt a request to encourage large leisure vehicles cheaper access to London will be successful. We all need to get with the programme, I’m sure there is good P+R available👍🏻

I could be wrong but I wonder if the OP lives and keeps his motorhome within the Zone, which encompases quite a large area of London? Obviously that is a bit different from visiting. I think the idea of the LEZ is to keep vehicles out but that is more problematic if you are already there. Exceptions have already been made for the likes of Classic Cars in the historic vehicle tax class. OK I appreciate that a motorhome is somewhat different but people in the OP's situation and being really penalised excessively if every time they move the van in and out of the Zone they have to pay a massive fee.

They are not penalised if the don’t travel in & out. They could get a tiny EV or hybrid or a non motorised, leave the Moho in a park up. I think money spent compared to lives ruined & lost isn’t a dear price to pay DK. We all make decisions based on what is important to us. If rules are bent for 1 person it sets a precedent🤷🏻♂️. Re classic cars I think that is really stupid allowing old polluting cars to use the roads without a penalty. They should be modified or penalised if their pollution levels are over the legal limit

These old classic cars tend to only do a few hundred miles a year so the environmental impact is negligible. Storing the Moho outside the LEZ and buying an EV to travel to it may be prohibitively expensive. It is also unlikely that any Moho inside the LEZ would be moving on a daily basis.

Like my statements CY yours are merely thoughts as neither of us have any inside knowledge👍🏻. If traveling using a Moho is prohibitively expensive then it shouldn’t be owned, I’d say Londoners health is costly too & a darn sight more important. Re classic cars I have a different view-I see a Hillman Humber Sunbeam chug thru our village at least 4 times a week & I've seen it around regularly so I’d say that is a persons daily drive, I think it’s fantasy for someone to bear the costs of these antiques & use them rarely, it sounds like PR to me🙂

I think you have completely missed the point of my post. I put forward the idea that the OP may actually live in the LEZ zone so its not the case of visiting. Obviously we don't know until that is confirmed. Now if he lives outside the zone he is in the same position of us all visiting London. However if he lives and keeps his motorhome at home within the LEZ I can perfectly understand his distress at having to pay a disproportionate amount of money every time he wants to go on holiday. We have no idea of the OP's personal circumstances. Ideally he would purchase a more compliant vehicle but not everyone is in that position.

I understood your post perfectly👍🏻. I can’t understand anyone’s stress at having to pay LEZ charges nor can I understand anyone thinking they should swerve it🤷🏻♂️. You play you pay it’s black & white DK. I would love to park in Hull city centre & not be charged for it but I am charged, my options are 1)don’t go there or 2) pay. I don’t recognise a 3rd way-get the council to drop or subsidise my going into the city centre.

I think the OP probably does live within the LEZ, as you suggest, David. In that position, I wouldn't attempt to keep a non-compliant vehicle. If I couldn't afford a modern clean diesel, or to move house, I'd just sell the van. I'd not be looking for special treatment but, then, that's me, I always look at the bigger and fairer picture.

These low emission zones are gradually being rolled out across the country and signing a specific petition for the Londodn area won't make difference to the people of Bath and Birmingham etc. There are various "classes" involved too. See this gov.uk LINK (Bath is class C) I think we'll see more and more LEZs so it worth reading up about them and how to apply for any exemptions etc.

There are lots of discounts and exemptions to the scheme although some are time limited, see here Not up to me to judge but I can't see how some of those exemptions qualify when a 3850kgs motorhome, probably under 10 years old, a lot less in some cases, should be in the same class as a lorry?

Looks like Euro 6 engines are exempt even in the ULEZ. At leat they are for our 3.5 tonne MH. Is it just the fact they are over 3.5 tonnes, or that they have less advanced engines that attracts the £100 charge? As far as I can see, if ours was charged for it would be £12.50 a day, which would seem reasonable. I would doubt that many are going to use a huge motorhome as a general runabout in London, so it would only be the few miles in and out of the zone. £200 every time you go away, particularly if you are still working and it’s only for a week or so, does seem rather excessive.

R2B, i agree and why not take it further, lets ban all cars, caravans and motorhomes, past times and hobbies that do not meet your high environmental standards. Flying should be illegal, travel more than 50 miles should require a permit, using a BBQ’s should result in jail. Hopefully by now you have got my drift......

FC, you are mixing me up with the radical Greta Thunberg crew, I respect her but I don’t support her ways. I believe in slowly, slowly catchy monkey. The nuclear option should be the last resort. It may have past you by but there is irrefutable proof that many lives have been lost & many lungs in the process of destruction. I will never ever apologise for caring about my fellow Humans. I have got your drift-you are not good at looking at all the options & weighing all the arguments if you were you’d not attempt to demonise someone who cares.

I own a 2015 3,850kg motorhome classed as a Private HGV which has a Euro 5 engine, so visiting Abbey Wood site is no longer a viable option due to it now falling within the ULEZ.
Perhaps I need a lift from a Mayday breakdown truck from just outside the ULEZ to the site The only problem is that I would have to have another "breakdown" to get me out of the ULEZ again

This issue has probably come about because the decision makers don't quite understand "motorhomes" Those that do will understand it is possible to have two identical motorhomes one rated at the original 3500kgs and the other with a small weight upgrade, taking it over the 3500kgs limit. The emissions from both are identical but one costs £12.50 to leave your house and the other £100 for each journey in or out. I think we all appreciate that London, in particular, has a major problem with pollution. But, as Steve points out a motorhome that large is unlikely to be used on a daily basis. The regular drivers of large 4X4's and big pickup trucks are likely to do far more damage to the environment.

You’re right, Meth. Abbey Wood is within the LEZ but outside the ULEZ.

It is outside according to the website map. I fear I complicated things by referring to the ULEZ. Abbey wood is most certainly within the LEZ, which the OP says now attracts a £100 daily charge for private HGV’s. So it would cost JimE £200 a visit.

We are getting a LEZ in Glasgow soon, delayed till 2022 as far as I understand.
DD will have a problem then as her (petrol) car is from 2002 and will not be allowed in the LEZ
Nothing wrong with the car, it is a Volvo V40 and has passed its MOT every year without many problems. Despite now being 19 years old, it has less than 100k on the clock. She really cannot afford a new car.
Living very close to town, she does not often need to take the car in there, but her office, where she can request a parking space when necessary, is within the zone, so that would not work.
No doubt we will have to loan her our 2014 Smart if need be!

Looks like I need to make a "U" turn - I should have said LEZ, not ULEZ, but it will still cost me £200 extra to visit Abbey Wood in a relatively modern MH.
Moderator Comment - Part of comment removed to avoid taking thread off topic, I appreciate it was said in jest but some just can't help jumping on such things!

I fully support a crackdown on the repugnant habit of dumping waste here at home and "over there" but feel that, in this country, that is being used as an excuse to avoid providing adequate parking facilities for in transit motorhomes.
Fortunately, a new pressure group called <CAMpRA> seem to be making some progress in persuading more enlightened local authorities of the financial benefits of MH tourism being encouraged close to town centres, so we may yet see expansion of paid-for aires in this country.
