UK staycation boom predicted

I've been trying to look up the most popular uk holiday destinations but everything is biased according to the publisher eg holiday cottage rentals or static sites etc. It looks like N Devon and Cornwall get the most promotion? I fear a bit of crush in the SW if summer holidays go ahead.

I'm dreading it tbh, Brue, and the G7 at Carbis Bay is going to add to the madness. What were they thinking of?

There is regular coverage of this issue on SW regional TV and many report a big increase on enquiries/bookings compared to a ‘normal’ year. If it’s good enough for Matt Hancock.....

The way things are going in the UK Govt-one of the best put downs we can use is-‘you are acting like a politician’👍🏻

I get most space in a great Cornish location by staying at home🤣

The way things are going it looks as though Europe is likely to be "closed" until the autumn so UK pressure could be even greater than last summer. Given the increased sales of LVs, perhaps now would be an opportune moment to invest in the "Good Lay-by Guide".

UK sales and hire of L/Vs is reported to be above last years levels,we have had two emails and a phone call from the dealer we use asking if we are wanting to sell our caravan (at their price)way below what our model is being sold for

Things are so fluid at the moment it would seem foolish to pay a deposit on anything unless there was a guarantee of that deposit being refunded or the booking moved? One major advantage of the way the Club does things, least we forget! We will have to wait until the 22nd to hear what the PM says about opening up but whatever way he does it I hope he is cautious. We don't get our second vaccination until the end of April so probably that will be the point when we start thinking about what we do next. I think those looking forward to going abroad will find it even more difficult because it not only relies on the situation in the UK but also in the countries wanting to be visited and the restrictions coming back into the UK. All seems very gloomy but perhaps the mood will improve with the weather?

Agree with David, we have no plans at all for going abroad with the caravan this year and have made 4 UK bookings with the Club, and one privately owned but did not require a deposit until 3 weeks prior to the booking. Things are still very volatile both at home and with mainland Europe, and can't see the light at the end of the travel tunnel yet.

Agree also. We had a booking for a river cruise in France in May which we've recently moved to the corresponding dates in 2022. And we still have our holiday to Greece in September carried over from last year to consider but even that seems doubtful now, certainly if the quarantine/testing regulations are still in force. A friend will look after the dogs for a fortnight but adding a possible extra 10 days on might just be stretching the friendship too far!

Problem is AD the longer this goes on the less chance those companies who keep moving bookings will still be in business. Brittany ferries are in severe financial difficulties I believe as are the rest probably and many sites who have seen little or no business may never return unfortunately.
No doubt those sites in the UK will have a boom year if we are ever allowed out again and will charge more to make up for the lost income of the last year and the shorter season maybe this year.

We have a few cottages booked over the year and a few club sites booking made last year when I wrongly thought this would be all over by the time the dates came by.
Certainly the club's booking procedures may leave many think they won't lose anything by booking if things change?

We have made several bookings for tour, hoping to be able to go ,and the reason? because of the already anticipated big rise in staycations, we have booked dates on sites while we could to give us a continuous hopefully uninterrupted trip

Whereas I've just booked the main destination sites and will find others later, assuming the whole thing isn't cancelled again. There'll always be something to grab for a night en route.

Never easy to get out and enjoy our own area in summer, looks like it will be even worse this year! We usually head for the peace and quiet of our static van site. Hope we can get there more this year. Spoke to someone on the site who said they are having a real sales boon, people buying from viewing on the internet. Maybe the people who normally go abroad.

I have had a lovely staycation for the last six months - here in a cottage in Cornwall - sheltered from the storms, granite walls a metre thick, two acres of land, four tons of logs in store for the wood burners, good neighbours within a mile or so, and good wi fi to read all your frustrations and hear of all your plans.
But I have no plans for any other staycations at all. When circumstances permit, and if I am well enough I will head off to somewhere else - but I might never bother with a caravan again. I have discovered greater freedom without one.

We have a few CLs and 1 site booked for the end of April (if we are allowed) Having just had our first jab today that puts us around the 6th May for our second jab if it goes all the way to 12 weeks, if a bit earlier that will mean having to move a few things around or make a drive home without the caravan.
We still have a Bilbao ferry booked for end April but that isn't going to happen so not to worried about that, its a flexi booking so can move it nearer the time or wait and see if they are going to cancel. The tunnel booking that has also been carried over since last year will hopefully get extended again. If all is going well we will go away to France/Spain later in the year.
In the meantime I will look out somemore CLs/sites in the UK, all the ones I have looked at so far are all offering refunds/amendments should we not be able to go due to restrictions etc. so happy to go ahead and make bookings.

I would think that the site for the G7 meeting was chosen a long while ago, well before the virus first feared it's ugly head. It was probably chosen as being in a very scenic area and act as holiday propaganda for the S.West. With all the security arrangements that will have had to been carried out it probably isn't feasible to move it to another venue. Perhaps with the restrictions still in place when it happens there won't be crowds of holidaymakers about anyway.

It's my view, Nellie, that if the restrictions are still in place in June then no one should be visiting, least of all a crowd from around the world with their entourage and press. That goes for anywhere in the country, btw, not just Cornwall.

I wonder if any leader of a G7 country, had they been hosting the conference, would cancel it? On a slightly different tack, if the restrictions are still in force, will all the guests be required to quarantine for 10 days prior to the meeting in a hotel, at their own expense of course?

In answer to your first question, assuming holding the event flies in the face of the rules/laws applicable to the general public in the country in question, I think cancelling would be the ultimate measure in earning respect of the populace as it would demonstrate the 'all in it together' approach. It would be practising what the leader preached.
Failure to cancel, in the same circumstances, would deem that leader a hypocrite lacking in integrity.
