Hi l have a Auto trail T625 Tribute which is 3.1 metre's high, at the rear l have a Maxvew V cube dome roof mounted, the bridge at Bolton Abbey is 10ft 9 inches high which is 3.3 metres, the height of the Maxview dome is 350mm which will raise the height just over the 3,1 metre height of the motor home. By my calculations l think l will have around 2" clearance but looking at the bridge that 10 9" is at the center of the span, l am unsure if l have enough clearance to get under the bridge. "Question" is their another way into Bolton Abbey avoiding the bridge we so want to go.

Regards

N Heathcote

I have taken an Autotrail Mohican with nothing mounted on the roof there. By the sounds of what you say, there is very little margin for error so think I would park up in the car park before the bridge on a day visit and stay overnight elsewhere. I believe you can stay overnight in Skipton. You can approach from the opposite direction via Grassington but the roads are narrow. Busses do use those roads so it should be feasible but I have never driven them so difficult to advise further.

The only other way is the Grassington route, as Peedee mentions. We've used the local bus on this route, its not an easy route. If you do get to the site the bus service is good, stopping outside the site in both directions.

    3.3m less 3.1m = 200mm. 7.87 inches clearance.

For those that haven't tried it. It is not very wide either and with possibly only 2 inches to spare is it worth the risk? Is the height of the arch accurate? 10ft 9ins is 3.27meters. With a 35cm cube on the roof, in my view there just is not enough clearance.

Overnight parking costs £5 in the Coach Street car park in Skipton.

There is a slight angle on the bridge so not worth the risk.

There’s a route in via Embsay and Eastby along Barden Road, which brings you out between the Site and Barden Towers, but it’s not for the faint hearted or very large MH’s. It’s a moorland road, with some gradients and bends. You certainly wouldn’t want to be going in and out this route each day, but you might get in to park up and stay. Otherwise as Jill says, it’s in via Grassington.

I've stayed at Bolton Abbey. The site is very crowded and large trees which ever way you look .... I'd find some where else rather than worry about whether the motor home fits through the bridge.

    Wharfedale is a good alternative.

We have stayed at Bolton Abbey, and the walks are fabulous. As is the wildlife, the Estate, the cafes, the moors around the Site, the cycling, and lovely Skipton  a short drive away. It’s one of our favourite Club Sites, and we don’t like that many to be honest, but this place does it for us.

Depends what you want and like.

The site's position is OK for walks etc I agree ... but IMHO as above, it's AN Other pack 'em in club site with more trees than the Amazon 🙄

The name Strid Wood might give a clue to the presence of trees and it's on the road side edge of the wood so it's not exactly in the depths of a forest. I thought it was an attractive little site, cafe next door, lovely walks especially seeing The Strid itself, Bolton Abbey and a scenic bus ride to Grassington. What's not to like? smilesmile

The River Wharfe is beautiful, the strid is definitely a part of it to show respect to-it is a cauldron of danger☹️. The whole area is beautiful. Last year was the first time in decades I’ve not visited.

We have only visited once, not long after we bought our first van. The arch was certainly interesting for a novice.😱 We really enjoyed the site and didn’t find the trees overpowering. The walking direct from the site was superb. Our MH will fit through the arch, so will have to visit again in the near future. Didn’t know about the bus to Grassington, that sounds good.

We went to the BA site once with our coachbuilt MH. It was only 3m high so went through the arch OK although I think we folded the mirrors.

I was watching this video just now. Scary stuff!

Nice vid Tinny👍🏻, I talked to a Ranger many years ago & he said it was very, very deep & shaped like a Tulip with overhangs either side & boulders within the tulip shape that periodically snags branches & batters them to matchwood with just the force of water. Apparently it has a washing machine effect☹️.

Bolton Abbey is one of our favourite sites not least because we were married at nearby Barden Tower (which also does a fabulous Sunday lunch) so we tend to go to this site around anniversary time. The strid is notorious for people jumping, and missing.... i used to live further down Wharfedale so (pre caravanning days) Bolton Abbey was only a 35/40 minute drive. If the OP is a bit nervous about the arch i suggest trying the clubs site at Grassington, there are also non club sites in the area, (yes, really).

Same here Rocky, it’s one of our favourite days out. We shall get there this year fingers crossed.

The Strid is an amazing bit of geology. It’s like watching a boiling cauldron with all the currents underneath, and the depths of the underwater pots. When we first started visiting, it wasn’t uncommon to see dead sheep lower down the river that had fallen in and drowned. Not so common nowadays. Tends to be silly humans giving it scant respect instead. We made two visits to BA Site a few years ago, in December. Huge storm while we were there first time, difference in level of river one week to next was in metres.

Its a great wild swimming location as well in Summer. Downstream of the Strid though 😱

JMW Turner painted the view towards Barden, the spot is marked not far from the site.

SteveL the bus also goes in the other direction to Skipton, lots of walkers use the bus route, getting dropped off na dpicked up at various points.

The local bus (single decker of course) does go through the arch a number of times each day, but the driver has to fold back the mirrors. It is likely that the height clearance is a bit understated to deter people from trying vehicles close to the stated height.

Can you temporarily reduce tyre pressures to lower the vehicle?

Just for the watersport lovers out there, footage of team of kayakers having fun on some Yorkshire/Durham rivers last year. Including The Strid. Fast forward to 3 minutes in, (Strid) and things don’t quite go to plan for one kayak, cue others baling in to the rescue😱
