Where to pitch at Garlieston?
Good morning.
We are hoping to spend about ten days here in July/August.
Having read the reviews we are a little confused as to where to pitch?
One reviewer said the walled garden was the best for a van with an awning/sun canopy; another had experienced, noise and lack of privacy in this area.
We are two people, no children or pets advice would be appreciated.

We were there in 2019, we pitched in the harbour area. The pitches close to harbour edge are non awning but those further back allow awnings, which is where we pitched and erected our awning.
We enjoyed our visit, walking around the area and exploring with the car to the Isle of Whithorn and along the coast road.
The journey there is slower than you might expect, when you turn off the motorway at Gretna, you will still have a couple of hours driving to get there.
Facilities in the village are scarce, Groceries are available in the local garage about a mile from site, but we had to pre-order milk, bread or newspaper from the garage. The warden gave us the number on arrival.

Stayed there twice. the first time when the kids were younger we had the harbour side, good views. The second time in the garden, we found it very quiet with more mature members, but that could change depending upon when you go. Have a look when you arrive.

I expect you've found you can download the site plan from the webpage of that site but, ultimately, it will depend which pitches are vacant when you arrive so it could well be pot luck and you'll need to make your mind up from what's available.

The pitches in the harbour area are slightly staggered, so even from further back you do get some views. We were there in June 2019 and took a pitch towards the far end of the harbour area, in front of the facilities block, which was very convenient. You face the view, so do not have to look at the building. Pitch 31.
We did use our canopy, it was a little windy, but not too bad

During the relaxed restrictions last year Garlieston was over run with tourists which is not usually the case.As a caravanner you could use one of the c l,s in the area and be away from the hordes.There is a lot to see and do in the area .

The harbour part of the site faces towards the north and the bulk of the Scottish mainland. That could be why it was established as a harbour hundreds of years ago. An Atlantic storm would be coming from the west, and the site is somewhat sheltered in that direction by the Isle of Whithorn. It just shows what the weather can be like in Scotland even in a sheltered spot.

OK, I bow to your superior knowledge of Scottish geography but my point was that the harbour side was exposed to lashing rain and very strong winds and I'd not pitch there again.

Yet on a summers night it can be absolutely balmy there! The short walk back from the pub without street lighting is "interesting", especially with the display of stars. Remember the Crowded House 1992 hit single . . . ?

That's us at Garlieston a few years back, quite a high tide, it was nearly over the harbour wall at Whithorn...nice walks through the policies of Galloway House adjoining the site.

Just in case anyone is interested but they tested the Mulberry harbours there prior to D Day.

Wow, an amazing response thank you to everyone who has taken the trouble to reply.
Unfortunately cl sites are out of the question, we were quite taken with one in Stranraer. But that’s another story! 😂
