Tier 4 restriction on caravan servicing

Just seen on Webb site's that Chichester caravan's at Emsworth and Winchester caravans have said due to new restrictions they have had to close totally as it is only car repair's and servicing allowed.Seem's some interpret rule's differently to other's.

Admittedly it was last April but my mobile engineer checked that he was allowed to visit premises and carry out servicing. In effect he is no different to a plumber or electrician visiting your house to carry out work. Tradesmen can still operate but with Covid measures in place, ie hands, face, space.

Clearly! - ALV at Tebay have closed their retail side but are remaining open for servicing etc - subject to Covid restrictions being adhered to - hence their offer to come and collect my van from me and return it (300 mile round trip each time!)

Just had a text from our dealer Lowdhams to say they are closed until the end of lockdown and that appointments will be rearranged then. As they are usually oversubscribed that should be interesting. At least our MH is only two years old so doesn't require an MOT yet and it's done less than 6,000 miles so the need for a service isn't dire, apart from any warranty implications.

Just seen on my dealer's webb site they are still doing servicing and it is up to owners if they want to take the risk and travel. Not very helpful as it then leaves the question of warranty wide open. They can say they were giving you the opportunity to get it done but you decided not too. It's a can of worm's. I have emailed my local MP for a bit of clarity but heard nothing yet and not going to hold my breath. It all come's down to dealer's can open workshop as it cannot be done from home and i am told i can't travel as it is not an essential journey.Sorry for rambling but i am bored.

Hi
Wouldn't it be easier to ask the people that hold your warranty if an extension could be provided for the duration of lockdown? Everyone then stays legal, and safe.

Have tried that, it is not the manufacturers warranty but the dealer has there own warranty that providing they do the habitation check and a visual inspection every year they will repair any water ingress problem's for the time i own the van.The reply i got from them was " We would not be as strict as the manufacturer with warranty how ever it is important we see the van annually" . My last service was December 2019 to get in before manufacturer warranty ran out so at the moment i am already on 14 month's. So they could say we are open but you did not take a chance and get a fine to bring the van down. It's a real shame no one can give a definite answer. I have tried all the caravan club's the NCC,police and my MP don't know who else to ask.

Hi, in his post JK said ask the people that hold the warranty.
As you have now exceeded their “we need to see the van annually” it seems they are the only ones that can confirm if they will continue to honour the ingress warranty.
If they have made such a vague statement maybe this is due to you exceeding the “annual” requirement already?
So far as you travelling its.clear to me that you will not get anyone to “give you permission”-you will have to make a decision.

Billiejo, Your problem is not "very, very grey" at all. I suggest you read the rules for the current lockdown and obey them. Stay home. If you doubt me consult your local police force.

Totally agree.
We were exactly in the same position this week regarding our 3rd year service on our Swift caravan. I originally scheduled it for to be carried out today by a mobile engineer. Due to the need to bring it home for the service on icy compound/roads, last week I revised the date until the 1st Feb only a few days before the 3rd anniversary. Lockdown was then announced and essential journeys only allowed. IMO no way can a service be classed as essential service. I have contacted Swift and they have confirmed that due to Covid all services/warranty dates for caravans affected (presumably applies to motorhomes as well) are extended for 6 months.

My Caravan was booked in for it's annual service on 19th January, the dealer phoned today me to say under the Covid rules I was not allowed to take it to them. Instead they will collect it on 11th leave it in isolation for a few days, then service it and bring it back to me. Very good service I thought.

My Bailey was booked for service in November last year, was cancelled due to lockdown and a new appointment made for January 22nd. Once more cancelled due to lockdown and it was suggested that maybe could be rebooked for March/April or when the workshop was able to reopen. Worried about going over the extended date to keep the warranty I emailed Bailey to ask if there would be another extension. All I got from Bailey was a list of caravan servicing companies in my area, both mobile and workshops. No mention of the warranty date being extended.
Luckily after trawling though the list I found a mobile service engineer, who after I explained my problem said he would service my van this Saturday, although he normally tries to avoid Saturday working. The van by the way is kept at home,
Bailey were not a great deal of help with the problem of the warranty date at all.

"Bailey were not a great deal of help with the problem of the warranty date at all."
If it makes you feel better - Knaus have been diabolical on this issue. Despite numerous emails from the dealer and a couple of 'web enquiry' forms filled in by me (Knaus won't accept emails from 'mere' customers) - we have heard absolutely nothing from them re the possibility of extending the servicing interval to maintain the warranty.
I have even told them of the situation I am in and told them I expect them to maintain the warranty - no response.
This is what one gets after buying a 'quality van' from a so-called reputable manufacturer.
In the end, this is what made me take up the dealer's offer to collect and return the van for me at a cost of an additional £300.

I bought my pre-owned Eriba Puck in Jan 2020 and is scheduled for a service, within dealer’s one year warranty, on 18 Jan at an authorised Eriba dealer 55 miles away. Twice the dealer has confirmed to me in writing that they are open for servicing.
Handover is done in a Covid Secure way. I have to be ‘Off Site’ before they start, and wait for a phone call to collect. Servicing should be completed same day!
In UK I don’t think caravan registration, servicing and insurance are legal requirements. But my caravan insurance documents state ‘the caravan must also be maintained in a sound and roadworthy state’.
Is that enough to satisfy a policeman to allow me to continue my journey unhindered - and back again?
Thanks for reading this.

Hi, If you have two confirmations of the dealer being open have you asked if this can be delayed?
I can understand the dealers wishing to continue and maintain their business, and they are perfectly entitled to do so, but we all know that the situation has changed with a likely greater chance of being stopped than last year.
The .Gov guidance says;
Essential activities
You can leave home to buy things at shops or obtain services where necessary. You may also leave your home to do these things on behalf of a disabled or vulnerable person or someone self-isolating.The question is will this be seen as a reasonable excuse and, as no one can answer that, best bet would be to see if the deadline can be extended.

We booked our annual caravan service by a local mobile engineer a couple of weeks ago for June this year, last year during lock down he did the service but asked us to not to approach him while he carried out the service so we stayed indoors and he was paid via bankers draft, alas this year the tyres have reached their retyrement age

I ask 4 policemen the same question they said as far as they were concerned providing i had proof of the caravan having a confirmed booking they would allow me to proceed but other police officer's may not look at it the same way especially as i had crossed into another county was the answer they gave me.. As said before very very grey area , the thing that annoys me most is no one in authority will give an answer.

Hi, Curious as to how you got on asking if the service deadline could be extended?
I think that any annoyance you feel is maybe related to you, apparently, being unable to see that there is no answer anyone can give you-you seem to want someone to give you 'permission'.
I have a service indicator now showing, on my car, that I meed an oil change so I will contact the Audi service centre.
I will ask if there is any leeway, so I do not need to travel, and, if not, will book the car in and travel the 40 miles there.

The answer to whether you can travel to get caravan service is in your hands as no one on here could answer for you, our Bailey was due in April last year and was eventually serviced in july when lock down was over and without any problems with the warranty from Bailey via Email
It was the same when i was told by a jobsworth i could not wait for my wife inside a doctors while she was in her appointment
my retort was "this is where rules and common sense collide" i did not leave

Annual Service during Covid!
My 3rd year service was booked for 19 Jan 2021 but I called Wiltshire Carvans Dealership to cancel as I was not prepared to risk travelling at my age (79).
They agreed, telling me that if locked down again expected was invoked (which happened) Eldiss would recognise and extend any Warranty period as required.
So, rebooked for early March next and will assess situation again, all with dealerships advice, of course, so as not to invalidate warranty.
So, keep it simple, ask your dealership and let them be your guide.

Hi allenandjean, i rang the caravan service center and asked. The thing is you are ok to take a car for service and repair the government have made that quite clear as a car is essential. It's the whole area about is a caravan an essential item if not why are caravan service center's still open but even they are not sure if i can tow my caravan there. What make's me angry (for want of a better word) is the fact that the people who make the rule's will not give a definitive answer.I have made the decision that it would not be morally wrong for me to take it so have re booked.
