Very low mileage motorhome

I’ve seen a Peugeot motorhome for sale which I like the look of. My main concern is that it has fewer than 10k miles on the clock even though it is five years old. It is a diesel and automatic, which is one of the main reasons I am interested in it.

What are people’s opinions about this low mileage van? Would it be worth a punt with a thorough inspection and a comprehensive warranty? Is there anything in particular that should be closely examined, or should it be one to avoid?

I look forward to reading any replies.

Thanks in advance.

Low mileage MHs are not uncommon. We bought a 3 year old van with a legitimate 9k on the clock.

Don't be put off by the mileage alone but look at the whole package. Does the condition of the vehicle correspond with the mileage? Do servicing records exist showing mileage? Is it for sale from a reputable dealer or is it a possible scam from an online seller?

You can get the vehicle inspected, as you suggest, and the club offers such a service. Warranties on second hand LVs often aren't worth the paper they’re written on.

My Ducato is 12 reg ( i.e. rising 9 years old )  with 43k on the clock

Look at MOT paperwork - that should shew the mileage at time of test, as should the handbook if its been filled in correctly

For somebody still in work I would have thought 3,000 miles aa year not unusual. Over the last 5 years many have not travelled this season and so 12k not unusual

    Ron

It may sound a stupid thing to ask but are you sure it's a Peugeot? I have had two Peugeot Boxer based motorhomes in the last seven years and an automatic box was never an option?

As others have said low mileage motorhomes are not unusual, if anything the opposite is true that high mileage motorhomes are relatively rare unless they have previously been hire vehicles. Most I have ever done in a year was about 4500 miles and that included a tour of Austria.

Good point, David. I think in 2015 autos were either Merc Sprinters or the Fiat Ducato Comformatic. I’m pretty sure the Peugeot Boxer was not offered as an auto.

We are, of course, assuming this isn’t a smaller vehicle such as the AS Mezan.

Boxer based vans are all definitely manual gearbox. I traded my four year old one with 10K on the clock. 2.5-3K pa is quite common for motorhomes.

Correction - yes, it is a Fiat. Every other example of this model that I have looked at has been a Peugeot, and I just assumed that this one was as well. I didn’t know that Peugeot didn’t have an auto version.

So far, no one has sounded any alarm bells about the low mileage but I will still be grateful to hear of anything important to check.

Many thanks for the responses so far.

Is this an AutoSleeper, Ron? Although they build on Peugeot,  they offer Fiat autos as options.

Personally, we avoided the automated manual Fiat Comformatic but I know others are happy with them.

If it is an AutoSleeper, you may find the AS forum of use although you may need to register to find all you need.

In some respects low mileage can be a double edged sword.  For example and assuming the whole thing has been well looked after, the habitation side may be in excellent condition having been only lightly used.  Of course it may have been driven little but used static as a holiday home a great deal.

The truck is designed to be used and to reliably complete large mileages; it is not designed to stand around unused.  Tyres, oils, seals, batteries, and a host of other things can silently deteriorate.  Not to mention the possibility of the local wildlife taking up residence.  Mice, for example, can do a mass of damage.

A careful professional inspection and condition report is well worth obtaining.

in August 2018 I bought a 2004 Peugeot Boxer Compass Avantgarde 300 with only 19k miles. In its previous 3 years it had covered 178 miles. All 5 tyres had most of their tread but the side walls were cracking. Also both batteries were worn out. Underside was a bit rusty so it was cleaned and undersealed. 6k miles later it is still fully working and fun.

You'll find, as said, that these relatively low mileage vans are the norm. We have an automatic Mercedes van, but there are very few other base vehicles which are fuly automatic so check out the details carefully and any offers which are too good to be true.

Our van was a year old when we bought it, hardly any mileage, there are some good vans out there. smile

To us it’s an inconvenience to the mice it’s life & death☹️. I let em be unless they cause dangerous damage then I use ‘catch alive’ traps & take em out into far meadow near the corn fields where they can pick up spilt corn👍🏻

Now that brings back a memory.  One or some had taken up residence in our integral garage and were busy munching through 25kgs of bird peanuts.  Mrs LLM set a few spring traps including one in the adjacent utility room, and promptly forgot about it.  A couple of days later she wandered into the utility with bare feet stood at the sink and ... well you can guess the rest.  Her disco dancing was something to behold and I learned a number of new words as I ROFL.  One very bruised big toe and ego and needless to say it was all my fault laughing; why, I have no idea undecided.

very happy so far with our Comformatic gearbox, only negative is that going downhill it does hang on to a gear when you lift on the gas pedal but  this is easily remedied by opting for manual during the decent.....

Yes, it is an Autosleeper and I have registered on the website - thanks.

Just out of interest, I checked the MOT history and found that in the first three years it covered about 8k miles, but since then it’s done about 600 miles p/a.

    Thanks again for the replies.

    Hope it helps.

There could be any number of reasons for the reduced mileage in the later years. I'd not worry about it as long as everything else checks out.
