Parking a motorhome

We have visited London several times over the years, stopping at Abbey Wood. We did last November for the first time in our MH. It was so easy popping down for 3 nights and access to the city is so easy from AW. As we were leaving we decided that we would make it a regular trip, to visit museums, exhibitions etc. Since March of course Covid has put paid to any thoughts of visiting any cities. Hopefully by the end of next year we will feel confident enough to return.

Well one day is fine if what you want to see can be seen and enjoyed in one day. It depends on the city and what the city offers I suppose.
My attitude is if I don't see it this time there is always next time. There may not be a next time I know. (No next time for London however)

As cities go I don't mind York, Chester or Worcester, but they are not really more than big towns anyway. The one city I would like to return to is Stockholm, but it would have to be with a local as a guide, just as it was last time we visited.

Bill Bryson likes London, to quote him, from is delightful book The Road to Little Dribbling (more notes from a small island) :-
"No body realises it, but London is one of the least crowded cities on earth. New Yok has 93 people per hectare, Paris 83, but London just 43. If London were as densely populated as Paris, it would have a population of 35 million. Instead what it has - parks 142 of them - and more six hundred squares. Almost 40 per cent of London is green space."
Last time we went to London in the motorhome we stayed at Abbey Wood. We took the bus to Greenwich, had a tour of the Cutty Sark. Then onto the River boat to the City visiting the Globe and Tate Modern. Lunch overlooking the river. Another day a trip to the Royal Observatory, worth the Climb for the view. When Cross Rail is up and running I would like to go back.

Even in these "unusual" times london was busy with foreign visitors this last weekend ,and OHs son on one of his often cycling trips ,on Sunday and said there were hundreds at the barriers keeping Whitehall clear for the Remembrance service, also many tourists around the places that were closed by the lockdown, he says he knew they not uk citizens ,as he was for ever being asked directions

St David’s is lovely. Unique in terms of City size, but has more of interest than many huge cities. I had a week at Twr Y Felin Adventure Centre back in the early 90’s, superb week. Although I recall being immersed in water for most of it!😁
I want to go back to Athens again. I was too young to appreciate most of what I was looking at really, but will never forget the Acropolis.......nor having my brand new gold bracelet taken off my wrist in the Plaka☹️ Insurance covered it though.

I think if we did what you do, I would stick with caravan as well. One of reasons we kept ours is to enjoy a long month away like we used to do down in Cornwall.

Athens is definitely on our future plans to visit.
I can fully understand your reasons to wishing to return as what we see/ appreciate when we are much younger is different as we get older with more time.
I'm not criticising but I what do find harder to understand is those who return to places they know well and have seen 80% of rather than exploring new places. Last year we visited Rome (4 days), Pisa ( 11/2 days) and have previously visited Venice ( 2 days) and Florence (3 or 4 days) which were all fantastic and I'm sure we have not seen every single area of interest, however we are highly unlikely to ever visit again preferring to search for new cities in Italy or wherever.

Footos who started this thread hasn't posted again, even initially when posts were "on topic".
It seems to happen often that someone asks for information or advice and never responds even when direct answers are given.
Looking at the number of posts here, presumably a number of people are still finding the thread interesting. Whether or not Footos is we don't know!

It would be nice if “off topic” could be cut a little more slack at the moment, providing of course it doesn’t get contentious. Given that none of us are out touring, just sharing some banter other than Covid is nice. Not intended to be critical Jill, just the simple fact that some are enjoying a bit of chat about city touring😁
I definitely wouldn’t take a MH into Athens......manic😱
