Covid - insurance refund?

Both motor vehicle and caravan insurances are based on a twelve monthly use regardless of time spent or mileage covered. Premiums are based on their insurers outlay and claims over passed years and predicted estimate during present period.

Since the Corona virus lockdown on 23 March 2020, my car insurers have kindly refunded a percentage of my annual premium for estimated non use during that and other months on two occasions.

As we have only been able to book limited breaks in certain areas during August & September, I contacted my caravan insurance company asking if they were considering a similar percentage  refund based on the fact that claims during many months this year have virtually been non existing. Sadly, this was declined with a reminder in the form of a pdf file attachment suggesting I read their policy rulings which has no mention of the pandemic.

Has anyone received a refund from their insurers based on the non use during lockdown periods?

Should we all be writing to our insurers with such a request?

In conclusion of my insurers attitude and decision to reap the benefits of a high income from their customers during these stressful times, I shall be looking elsewhere come renewal date.

I have neither received nor sought a refund from my insurance company for either the car or MH.

The car only ever does low mileage so there’s not much difference there although the MH has done many fewer miles this year. However, both vehicles are still at risk from fire and theft and there’s always the chance of an uninsured driver hitting either while parked at home.

I'm content with things the way they are so won’t be writing to my insurers but thanks for the tip. 👍🏻

I think you have done well.  My insurer covers both the MH and the car and has actually put the premiums for both up.

I cannot see any caravan insurance company givlng a refund, because surely there are risks of damage or theft at any time, whether it be in storage or on a site.  Last night firework rockets were being let off and can do damage to caravan and motorhome roofs,  and you would expect to get it repaired through your insurance, so for us it's all year insurance and pease of mind.

Yes, Direct line made an initial refund.  In October they gave the option to register the Millage  on 8th October and will ask for a new figure on policy expiry. There is a formula for reduced use which they will apply.

The "refunds" that some insurance companies gave to some holders

Were they on low or high milages when the policy was taken out ,our policy for the car is based on 5000 mile per year so not expecting any refund

And our caravan is insured which covers if or not it is used , so is not a quetsion i would ask
