York Rowntree Park access question
Hi, we're hopefully picking up a new 8ft wide caravan in the next couple of weeks. It would be nice to visit the Rowntree Park site but the access to the site via Terry Avenue looks like it could be fairly tricky. Looking at google maps it looks like this is a single track road.
Should I be concerned? How is access managed with other road users if it's not one-way?
Thanks in advance for your advice.
Andy.

Many thanks for your replies. I will be travelling from the south via the A64. Would it be better to exit onto the A1036 onto Nunnery Lane or carry on the A64 to the A19 and come in from the opposite direction?
Thanks again,
Andy.

As you approach York from the Leeds direction on the A64 you will come to a lane split-right is for Scarborough and the coast,so stay left.On your left will be York Golf Club and the exit you need is just after it.
Take the left exit and you will see a new Park and Ride to your left and you cross over a rail bridge.Stay left, you will go through one set of lights for the P and R and immediately after is another st of lights.Turn left at those lights,on your left will be a Tesco and then you will come to a roundabout-go straight ahead. On your right will be a grassy parkland area. Here you need to look for a second right with a brown and white campsite sign-take that right turn with care. You will be on a long straight road which has cars parked both sides as you approach the back entrance of the Racecourse. The road is wide enough to get down but just use your commonsense re approaching cars etc.The road swings round to the left and on your right is the new development of flats etc at Terry's chocolates-watch the speed humps. You will then come to a T junction at which you turn left. This road runs up to Clementthorpe traffic lights. You will have a Sainsbury Local on your left- go ahead at the lights and you enter a 1 way system.Nunnery Lane feeds into it ahead and to your left but you swing and keep right as if going back on yourself.Traffic will be coming over the bridge from your left. You will see a White painted pub "The Swan" straight in front of you.Take the

Sorry iPad played up.Take the street at the left side of the Swan pub crossing the traffic with care.On your left will be The Slip pub.At the T junction turn right but watch for traffic from your left as it is a two way road.Eh voila the site is on your right.Do stick to the after 1pm arrival rule as you really do not want to meet out going outfits by arriving silly early-no point in looking for trouble.
Good luck.

It’s not Rowntree Avenue that might be an issue but the road you turn down at the Swan pub, people park in places opposite each other that narrows the road considerably, like any caravan towing taking your time and keep your speed down and everything will be fine.

Many thanks for the detailed route to the site. I've looked at google maps and can only see the camp site sign which takes you off Blossom Street onto Nunnery Road at the traffic lights. Did you mean come off earlier at Scarcroft Road and head down to Bishopthorpe Road? Is there much difference?
If you could add a little detail with road names that would help.
Thanks in advance, Andy.

Will do - I've been struggling to find. I'll look again.

I have noticed on various postings at different times that some people don't seem to use the Sites Directory and Handbook.
I have found that the directions given in it are reliable.
Having said that, the entry for Chatsworth states that the nearest railway station is 4 miles away at Bakewell, despite the station having closed in 1967 and the line being closed the following year with the track taken up and turned into a cycle track/footpath.
I did point this out to the editor a few years ago and he said that this would be removed from the next edition. A few editions later it is still there!

Its good to see that "mistakes" are picked up by some, and it proves to those that publish such tomes it was not wasted, although many complain there is not enough information given ,in these days of having to be "spoon fed" with every thing

Dunelm, have reported your post, it may, and again may not, produce a result.

Having spoken to a helpful chap at the York Rowntree site it appears that if you are coming northbound on the A64 towards York then the A1036 (Tadcaster Road) to Nunnery Lane is a suitable route into the site rather than the A19 which better suits people heading southbound along the A64 (north of York).
Perhaps someone at HQ could update the web site to reflect this.
Thanks, Andy.

I would tend to agree wedgy, that is our chosen route in, and we know York very well. We do however exit via Kenexton’s route, past the Racecourse. Never found Terry Avenue an issue, more cyclists and pedestrians than vehicles.

Can you share with us how the access will be changed? I was just looking at Google Earth and there seem limited options?
I suppose an even more important question is will the flood defences mean they won't have to evacuate so often?

Hello David,
Hello David,
Adequate alternative access will be provided during the work. Details can be found on the club Rowntree Park webpage.
The work will make no difference to the site regarding flooding. The site is on a flood plane. It is all about protecting over 130 plus properties in the Clementhorpe area which is much needed and has been on the agenda for several years.
It will mean that when people who want to walk into the centre of York from the site (which I understand is owned by the City of York council) that they will have to use the gate at the back and walk through the side streets or along Bishopthorpe Road.
Cheers,
Latebird.

Thanks, I will have a look at the site page. Last time we went to York we stayed at Nether Poppleton and got the bus in so it's been a few years since we stayed at Rowntree Park.

The last time we had to follow the "alternative route" to the site via Vine Street it all became rather "interesting".
Terry Avenue was blocked by construction at the adjacent hotel.
The Wardens and the Construction Crew at the Hotel adjacent had coned and signed appropriately but a "Mr Exceptional" type still chose to park his silver Vauxhall directly opposite the junction which prevented longer units being able to get a swing left into Vine Street.Chaos ensued- as my late Dad put it "You cannot educate pork!"
Good luck,it did get sorted but not what you want to experience after negotiating York's backstreets🙈.
