Television
At times it is nice to settle down and watch a film or sport or whatever. As the years have rolled by reception for TV has improved dramatically, unlike the quality of the programmes provided by terrestrial providers, a recorder in the caravan may help. At home it is not a problem with iplayer etc but in the caravan there is usually a restriction on the amount and quality of the wifi available.
I have tried tethering my TV & Amazon Firestick to my smartphone. This does work perfectly well but I am unsure how much data I am using. Is anybody in a position to help me please. I do need to know how much data I am using for, say, 2 hours of HD TV viewing.
Of course, any other viewing solutions will be welcome.

When I watched a Grand Prix qualifying in HD on my iPad it used just over 1GB in an hour. As a result I didn't watch the actual race as I would have run out of data. I think if you are going to watch internet TV in the van you need a very generous data allowance, I would end up getting through my 8GB in a week. Typically when I download HD films from the sky store at home, they are 2 / 3 GB, so I think working with 1 GB an hour would be a good average.

If you have the choice, don’t select the HD version as HD uses more data.

On our phones, one BT using EE, the other O2 we have Apps that show how much data you have left of your monthly allowance. The best way to be sure for the TV set up you are using, would be to check the figure, watch a 30 minute programme, then check again. If as TW suggests a non HD version is available you would be able to see the difference.

I have an app on my phone that tells me how much data I have used, does your network offer the same? When I am using my Windows 10 laptop I can use the metered setting which doesn't allow updates which saves a bit. However I doubt a stand alone TV will have that facility. Phone data is relatively cheap now and most networks allow you to change your plan on a monthly basis so I think a bit of experiment might be called for.

I agree with Steve reguarding data usage. In my view if you want to regularly watch TV usiing your phone I would buy a package offering unlimited data. I use Giff Gaff which allows you to change your package monthly and if you run out of dat a you can top up as necessary.

According to the interweb, watching IPTV uses:
Ultra 4K or UHD 10-20GB/hr
High (HD) 1080p 3-7GB/hr
Medium 480p-720p 0.7 GB/hr
Low 240p-360p 0.3 GB/hrConsider HUAWEI E5785 CAT6 300Mbps 4G LTE WIFI MIFI ROUTER or similar which both boosts signal and pair it with a pre paid data only sim. Be even better when 5G is cheap.
You can carry a sat dish and use that with a mini receiver, works well everywhere north of the Spanish border with an 85cm dish but to be honest this will be dead technology in 2 years as 5G gets cheap.
Data will become cheaper I am getting the Huawei and getting external antenna fitted. Should be good for virtually anywhere.

Nothing to do with data use but we tend to record stuff onto a HDD and watch it back on the tv when we are away. No signal strength worries, no tv signal worries either. Just a different outlook onto the same problem - entertainment on the go! In UK, freeview works in most places now. In Europe, sat dish gives us free sat, usually! But HDD works everywhere with little hasstle.
