We heard that there is a national shortage of LPG, we were not aware of this until we were on a site in early September when a fellow caravanner told us.

Is this across all brands, or a problem with any specific one?

Have you tried the Flo-gas dealerships as the company has taken over a very wide range of brands, including Macgas. It has become a major player in the commercial sector supplying roofers etc, so many builder's merchants, roofing suppliers are stockists.

Go for a refillable. With cheap LPG from a pump, it will pay for itself over time.

We've just 'bitten the bullet' and have bought a medium Safefill bottle.

I know there are a decreasing number of outlets to refill but, I had a conversation with Matt from Jacksons Of Arley, one of our local caravan/ camping shops who also refill the bottles.  They were out of stock for Safefill bottles, but I asked if they intended to continue to supply LPG to fill Safefill bottles.  He said that they had spent serious money installing the facility, so there is no way they were going to stop stocking LPG to refill bottles.  I asked him if he could send me a quick email when they have their next stock of bottles in.  I had a phone call from him on Saturday, so I went down straight away and picked up a bottle.

Even if I can't get it refilled anywhere else, I know Jacksons will be able to oblige.....  All as I need to do is to get it topped up from time to time....

I'm looking a equipping us with a motorhome again. Be that a PVC or small coachbuilt and notice lots of lpg tanks which is concerning if Tinwheeler is correct 😱

At least if you have cylinders, whichever type, there is a storage space for another make whereas an lpg tank offers no such option!

This area is very short on dealers and caravan and camping shops and I dread to think where you could purchase lpg.

I think we are fairly lucky for caravan and camping shops here.  It is debatable as to whether it is that economical for us to have bought the Safefill bottle, though.  It takes us ages to get through a gas bottle, but, to be honest, I'm a bit more concerned about the weight.  With Calorlite bottles becoming as rare as hens teeth, Safefill is a good light alternative, so we've gone for it.  I'm just happy that Jacksons will continue to fill the bottles.

It is becoming more of a concern, B2. There’s a sticky thread listing filling points in Tips for making vanning cheaper.

Shell are removing a lot of their auto gas pumps which is reducing options. We use very little gas so don’t envisage it being a huge issue for us personally to the extent that we've just changed our van for another with an underslung tank.

That was my thinking, as well, David.  Weight was a big issue with our last van ( but not with the present one), so I bought a 7.5kg Safefill, primarily to save weight, about two years ago.  We have a filling station about 5 miles from home, so I just make sure it's topped up before we go anywhere.  Since we use so little gas, I only have to make the trip a couple of times a year.

The guy at the filling station was telling me that they are doing a roaring trade re-filling Safefills because a lot of commercial organisations in the area are switching over to them, so I don't think there's much danger of loosing that source anytime soon.

I think the big 'multi-national' can afford to take the hit of removing LPG points and replacing them with something they are going to make more of a profit out of, but the smaller dedicated LPG filler providers...  such as Jacksons of Arley, who also sell Safefill bottles and have a 'niche market' are more likely to continue supplying.  As Jackson's said to me....  they have spent a lot of money installing the facility and they are not going to stop supplying it.  They would lose money...

My main problem with refil tanks is the shortage of stations also the lack of knowledge of the staff!  This was my first time filling gas myself, I needed advice from the staff but she was not allowed to go onto the forecourt.  I got into quite a mess. in the end she told me my nozel obviously was'nt compatable. I sourced the next filling station on my journey ro be confronted with similar lack of interest. Long story I did eventually find a filling station with member of staff who at least gave me the confidence and patients.

I did find Flo gas has a video to see on you tube which explains how to use the pump.

considering It is gas under pressure would'nt it be wise to have staff understand how to operate equipment!

I no this is an old thread but, we are now in 2021 and caravan season will start next week and there are still no calor lpg bottles anywhere. Even calor online has no bottles. It can't be a shortage of empty bottles to fill, because every dealer I have tried has a cage full of empties.

I wonder if this is the consequences of widespread adoption of EHUs, we hear of members stating they get over a year from a bottle? Clearly, catering for these users is a lost commercial cause with the bottles tied up and gas purchases minimal.

Our camping style rarely involves an EHU, solar doing essential electric duties, though we certainly get through a lot of LPG. Up till now I have had no issues getting Flo gas 10 kgs Gaslight the only ones I regularly require. Hope that continues once the starting gun is fired and we collectively start consuming it, some like us big time.
