Water pumps

Why are Caravan water pumps so very noisy? We have a 2018 Swift Conquerer and when inside the unit the pump sounds like a road drill.😂😂 Luckily outside the unit it doesn’t sound quite so bad .

Most c/van water pumps are outside in the water barrell if you have as most motor caravans an inboard pump, unless it is fitted on decent anti vibration mountings then it will sound loud

I spent a long time altering things to get our onboard pump now almost silent, there are a few things that you can do.....

make  sure the pump sits on something soft and is not fixed down too firmly, ours is not actually fixed down at all

make sure none  of the pipework is up against the side of the van or the furniture, if it is, move it a little and put padding in place between pipes and floor or other surface

remove as many tight bends as possible, a curved pipe is better than a 90 degree joint

make a padded cover or box to sit over the pump itself

Ours is now so quiet we often run out of water without knowing as we cannot hear the pump running on   🤣

Because they are cheap, poorly made, fail regularly, and generally a bit poor. There are many automotive 12v pumps that are more efficient, virtually silent, bulletproof reliability, but probably cost more.

Caravan manufacturers R&D is lacking in this area and they appear to make no effort to decouple the noise.

As KjellNN has shown, a little bit of decent engineering and you can improve the situation to a good level. I am sure for a reasonable remuneration he would advise the caravan manufactures on how to delight their customers!

Our Unicorn 2 (2014) onboard pump was fairly noisy, although not as bad as the U1's apparently. They had added some neoprene like shock absorbers, which deadened it a bit. However, a pump in big sound box (void under the seating) is never going to be easy, unless you engineer it well like Kj. We put up with it an soon got used to it. It did have the advantage that you knew if it hadn't switched off, unlike our previous external version. The noise and adverse comments, was perhaps the reason Bailey move back to external on later models.

    🤣🤣🤣.......maybe!

the on board pumps are not that cheap.......about £50 last time we bought one, and that was not the full price.   We are on our 3rd pump and second accumulator in our 2008 van.

I wouldnt say the on board water pump in my 10 year old Swift is very noisy but you can hear it.

As the pump is only operational for a few seconds it doesn't bother me.

Ours was even noisy outside at first, but worse inside.  Maybe Swift took note of the feedback we sent them!!

We mostly shower in the van, and wash up, so the pump gets a lot of use.  We had 10 years of being away up to 4 months at a time, or 2 trips of 3 months.

Can anyone suggest why my water pump does not turn off when the tank is full or when we turn the tap off.   This is the second pump we have had as I think the other one must have burned out without us knowing.   The pump only turns off when we switch it off inside the caravan. Any advice would be appreciated.

    Maybe adjust the pressure switch?

Our pressure switch is similar but no LED. Operation is the same in practice but need to carry out similar without LED but listening to pump

Our motorhome on-board pump has been very noisy since we came back from Eu in March and used it again twice only in Sept & Oct, having drained the tanks and heater.

It's called "water hammer".  The pipes vibrate against the walls etc, but because they are hidden I can't get to them to insert any deadening.  The Shurflow pump is mounted on "rubber" washers.  There is a strainer on the inlet side.

I suspect there is air in the system.

Any suggestions gratefully received as it sounds like a pneumatic drill digging up the road and can be heard outside.

    Solved: dirty strainer.

for those with the Truma outside pump, i can recommend the Whale version, much quieter and seems to have more pressure , and the overall design is much better than the Truma equivalent, and pretty much the same price.
