Advice needed on towing with a full size discovery SD4. Caravan is a 2019.Swift Challenger 560. Is this smaller engine option a good tow car or Is the Volvo XC90 a better option. Both cars around 240 bhp And similar weight.

Go for the SD6, bags more torque and in the real world more economical than the 4.

.. we've just gone for the Discovery 4, and are away on our first towing journey.  All seems good and the HSE has lots of interesting features......

I have owned the 3-0lt Discovery 4 which averaged 30mpg solo and about 25mpg towing a twin axle Bailey Unicorn. I have driven the 2-0lt version which seemed quite lively just lacking some of the acceleration of the larger engine. I changed the D4 for a D.Sport with the 2-0lt ingenum engine which in the smaller, lighter car did pull the same caravan well. However I recently changed to a 3-0lt R.Rover Sport which is towing a 2,000kg caravan and does 37mpg solo (good runs) and 26 mpg solo. My conclusion is that the larger engines seem to be just as economical in real life motoring and towing. All have been rock steady tow vehicles. I did consider a Volvo XC 90 but there were a few posts with problems over tow bars and wiring etc.
