Elddis locker lid problem

I own an 2016 Elddis Affinity 554 caravan. It has suffered a well documented problem with the locker lid cracking. I have taken matters up with both Elddis and my dealer with absolutely no acceptance of culpability. Interestingly the design has been totally changed on later models implying an obvious manufacturing fault.

The cost of replacement is circa £800 and would replace an inferior product clearly vulnerable to the same outcome.

I have a quote from an independent manufacturer for a fibreglass replacement at less than half the costs shown above.

The manufacturer concerned is supply only and has suggested the new locker lid be fixed with a piano hinge.

I wonder if other Elddis owners have any experience on the matter or could suggest a caravan service engineer who could advise on this matter and hopefully undertake the work.

I live in the South Manchester area but would be prepared to travel to get the work done satisfactorily.

A well know issue with this model I understand- Disappointing that Elddis are unwilling to take responsibility. A risk to their brand they must be willing to take!

This was an absolutely awful piece of design. We bought a 2016 Affinity 550 new and suffered terrible problems with this issue and with damp and also cracked panels!  We just wished that we'd throughly inspected the caravan before parting with our hard earned dosh. But we foolishly trusted the manufacturer to get their design and work standards correct. Never again!

I would advise against using a brass piano hinge as the whole front panel of the caravan is too flimsy and cracks form around the screw holes. Several owners have had to have complete panels replaced at a cost of thousands due to these cracks spreading upwards to the front windows. The main design problem is due to the gas struts, which are far too strong and exert too much pressure on both the locker lid and the hinges. Whatever you do, please don't refit the same struts!

Needless to say, I would never have another Elddis!

I truly hope that you manage to get this sorted out satisfactorily.
