Wild camping problems due to lack of facilities
I live in Pembrokeshire and like many parts of the country there has been a wild camping problem. People seem to overlook some of the basic causes of this and it is the lack of facilities like Aires in Europe or the great American facilities i have used for years when a RV there.
1.Campsites here have been full with no where go at times.
2. Many people can not afford the high prices charged at sites typically £35 and often more. If you have a family charging for pitch, awning then each child and an adult it adds up to a huge amount.
The councils and National Trust forbid staying overnight in car parks and patrol at 05.00 in the morning to fine people. Why not charge a simple fee of say £5-10 a night many would pay. Arrange with local campsites to charge a small fee for people needing to empt their waste tanks and rubbish. It is normal in the US to go to any site and pay for your waste and they expect people to have 40gal (181 ltr) fresh water, 25 gal (113 ltr) black tanks and 22 (100 ltr) gal grey water for only $10.
It is private companies contracted out that do the checks and with the modern use of cameras they could easily check up on any offenders and fine.
Done properly this would not cause any initial increase of costs. The parking machines here already have apseacil price for mortorhome day parking. America also uses honesty boxes when you fill in form and pay cash in a metal box provided or via a mobile phone similar to UK car parks now in many places.
Oh i know why this will not happen it will be due to the pressure of the campsite owners.
In France and other countries it was made to happen by the pressure from the camping clubs and it was shown to increase the use of shops in a town.
At the moment i am now a caravaner in Europe but whilst traveling to places I want these facities as well and they are available for overnight stops on European motorways (parking free!). It is not just motorhomes!

Oh i know why this will not happen it will be due to the pressure of the campsite owners.
It won't happen due to a fear of abuse by travellers. As for £5 to £10 try £15 if you want aire type facilities requiring inspection and cleaning.

Those paying £35 a night do not want 'outsiders' coming onto site to use facilities which, on UK sites are within the centre of sites.

I don’t know if that’s the case or not, but CCC, the only club to offer such a service, have currently suspended it specifically to mitigate CV risk.
The Campervan and Motorhome Processional Association have introduced a register of motorhome waste disposal sites in Scotland. Very much work in progress, but a great initiative LINK. Perhaps Clubs in the rest of the UK could lead and take on a similar role in partnership with tourism promotion organisations and local authorities?

David - even you must admit that this subject has been done to death time and time again. Maybe it's just coincidence that the OP has started it up yet again just as the mods and Rowena will be clocking off on a Friday but I doubt it.
But then ... maybe you have something new and insightful to say about the subject?

Surely if you can't afford a "mainstream" campsite, you look for something cheaper like a CL. Even if Aires become established here, they are unlikely to be any less expensive.🤔
