Perhaps the private sector (Michael Eavis?) ought to take some degree of responsibility for dealing with that problem? The June festival is the axis around which all that stuff revolves and sustains Glastonbury as an alternative community. He’s got plenty of land/resources/goodwill and has a responsibility to the local community to operate responsibly. However, as you say, nothing much to do with aires, but freeloaders thinking they’re saving the planet by smoking weed and leaving **** everywhere!

Interesting to read. I visit Hylands most days at various times and have never heard of or seen the bus service! There are 3 carparks, 2 from the same entrance.
Are you referring to the bus stop on the dual carriage way, three mile hill? If so only one entrance approptriate signposted Hylands House as opposed to the estate.
It's a vast park, 600 acres I believe, with a house, open only on certain occasionsbut available for hire and weddings. Beautiful formal gardens and great varied walks.
Nice place to pull off the A12 for a leg stretch, dog walk, lunch break. But please don't abuse it, we've already had several times when travellers have had to be evicted and I fear height barriers might be used as cheaper option to deter future visits!

Both P&R sites have height restrictions of 2m and 2.2m. I cant think of a single carpark that doesnt have height restrictions in the city, except the B&M the new Aldi on the Army and Navy roundabout. A couple of weeks ago we commented lots of motorhomes in Aldi carpark, assumed folk stocking up as it was as the restrictions being lifted. Not a chance, they had to be moved on and the area cleaned!
Very sad that some spoil it for others.

Where elderly New Age Travellers wheels grind to a halt. I sat my dear old Dad down on a bench with an ice cream on one visit, and just told him to watch and wonder. He had never seen anything like it. It was the overgrown toe nails and filthy bell jangling feet that made blew his mind as I recall.....🤣 We were staying in a lovely B&B just under the Tor, but he did wonder what all the crystals, wind chimes, pan pipe music and joss sticks were for🤣

No it only goes to show that in that particular cramped instance, having no real outside space to relax is not my cup of tea and I suspect that many motorhomers would feel similar. Not that I was against provisions of overnight sleeping in MHs
but many others cant be doing with a regimeted 5 day 'program' of touring, its everything the spontenaity of how some people tour, isnt.
I have no '5 day 'program' '. It is a simple fact that I will usually find enough of interest for my stay within a short distance. I have no idea what it might be until I arrive. I don't plan such things.
we are all different but please have a little respect for those who find 'cheek by jowel' parking exactly what they require at the time they need it.
There you go again BB. Try reading what I said. I showed no disrespect for anybody using 'cheek by jowl parking to stay the night. I merely commented on said car park as being cheek by jowl. Don't look for criticism where none exists.

So, have I got this correct? Given the number of Britstops, pubs and other stopover points for MHs (as PD and others have listed) "most" motorhomers would be content with a few extra overnight parking bays in local car parks or P&R sites for maybe a tenner a night or so. And, presumably, if that happened to be in their own "back yard" they'd be equally content? And, equally, they'd be prepared to look for existing facilities to take on water and dump toilets and rubbish?
We may have found a way forward!

Oh yes three mile hill, literally just off the A12, it was the A12 until they rerouted round the town, as it was then. There is a carpark immediately on the right as you go in the gates, saves the walk from the house 😉.
Just checked Google maps and if you didn't know it was a carpark immediately on the right, surrounded by trees so rather shady.

we dont do enough touring in the uk to answer your question, however from our experiences overseas weve never felt how you describe... 'super hesitant' of parking a MH is a foreign feeling to us....we generally feel the opposite...'super looking forward to it'...
we do think 'if somewhere doesnt look right' we would just move on, but have never felt the need or inclination to do so from any stopping place weve used....
they are either remote with no one around for miles or they tend to be in towns/cities where there will always be someone (often loads of vans) for company...
i dont even think we have ever posed the question as to whether we feel 'safe'....everywhere we visit seems safe enough to us....perhaps we arent the nervous types or have sufficient experience (of different countries) not to fret too much?

As i posted much earlier in this thread ,if staying on an "aire type" sropover as a few it seems want in England ... ,How do local authorities get round the 6mtr min spacing that is a reqirement that would be insisted on, before a licence to operate a camp site

WTG/BB, thanks for answering my questions. I suppose to a certain extent it’s about choosing a stop with care, although probably more successful on the Continent than in UK, given the size of the countries and range of stops available. There are places in UK we haven’t thought twice about parking up and having a sleep, but surprises do happen. Helmsley MH stop we wouldn’t worry, but Cities, no way😱

It is NOT a campsite so no need and anyway the requirement is not law as far as I know just a recommendation but happy to be corrected. Canterbury P&R, a few car parks in Bury St Edmunds, Yorkshire all seem to happily work without using half the area for fresh air...
As stated in numerous posts above the difference between camping is having chairs/awning etc put whereas an Aire type facility is just somewhere to park not camp.

That's an interesting point, but surely cooking is not involved since the whole point is being able to stroll into whichever town/village is being visited and support the local economy?
BTW, from recent experience I think "fresh air" comes as a chargeable extra in some parts of Yorkshire!

If you are saying that young adults of today have easier and more likelihood of car ownership, then not sure. My OH was a car owner/driver at age 17, but he never raced around car parks, took drugs or sat playing overloud music as far as I can remember. It’s not an age related thing at all, more a behaviour issue. I have seen very anti social behaviour by all ages, sexes, cultures etc..... Bad upbringing and poor parenting happens without discrimination.

That will be the car park charges then M!😂 Some parts of Yorkshire do indeed “fleece” the unwary tourist. I recall parking in Whitby and going to loo......I’d spent a fiver before even getting out of car park!

Reading some of the Continental touring blogs, it does indeed happen, but goes against the ethos of the provision. It’s what eventually goaded Marazion to stop all MH and campervan parking on the front of Mounts Bay at Long Rock. MH we’re bumper to bumper along the linear park up area, and on the sea wall side of the vehicles lots had chairs, tables, barbecues, wash lines etc.... totally impossible to access beach, and pedestrians had to either cross over road, or walk in the road. They weren’t overnighters, but there for long stays some of them.
