We will be travelling from the North of England, to the Min Y Don site at Harlech (west Wales). The sat nav says that from Chester going west to Harlech we should take the A5104, A4212 then the A496. This is straight through Snowdonia.

Does anyone know if this route is doable with the caravan?

Would the A55 then A470 be easier? Or a different route?

Any recommended navigation apps for future travel?

Many thanks in advance

I like to pull out my road atlas and look. Generally if it is a Trunk Road (shown in green on most maps) then that will do me fine

To answer your question as to whether recommended route is doable then the answer is Yes it is. We've driven that route to Coed-y-Llwyn site and Harlech is on the A470 further on so that shouldn't be a problem.

The route is fairly straightforward but fiddily at times as quite a few hills and sharp bends but if travelling on a non weekend it shouldn't present any heavy traffic issues. The quicker way will probably be along the A55 and A470 and like most major arterial routes it can get clogged at busy times. So you pays your money etc.

I don't know what day or time of day you are intending to travel or how far from so can't say which one will suit.

If you need a stop there is the AS site at Corwen which won't take you out of your way if going the scenic route.

By and large the roads in Wales are excellent. They will be single carriageways, with some gradients. There will be Timber lorries and Milk tankers about. Take your time, allow others to pass and enjoy the view on your route. I would avoid the A55 because it is always blocked or under repairs.

The A470 is not the easiest of routes.  The turn from A5 junction after Betws y coed is tight but OK, the road here is very tight for a mile or two heading towards Blaenau, It is narrow and has high walls with overhanging treetrunks. I did get stuck there when a euroliner type coach was coming the other way. Blaneau is also tight, one swithchback needs a lot of swing out.

Personally would stay on the A55 to Menai, then the A487 ,cross river at Penrhyndeudraeth, onto the A496 to Harlech. Be careful at Harlech, the A496 has a sharp Right turn to stay on it, do not go straight on, it is passable by goats only. This route gives you very good roads and I think is quicker than going over the top.

I also like Wrexham to the A5, through LLangollen, A494 Bala to Dolgellau, up the A470, the A487 to Penrhyndeudraeth. You can cut the corner through Maentwrog but this tight and the locals make it hard work with some entertaining parking. This is possibly the quickest route but depends on the A5 traffic.

It is doable but fiddly as said before. A55 is easier but huge set of roadworks on it around Colwyn Bay at the moment if I recall causing big jams.

Thank you so much for your help. We took the road straight through Snowdonia and it was absolutely fine. The last 5 miles or so on the A496 were slightly trickier, but nothing like as challenging as the roads we are used to on trips to the Lake District!

Thank you again for your support - what a great community.
