Lammergeier (Bearded Vulture)
For the passed couple of days there has been a very rare visitor in Derbyshire. Apparently it’s about a 4 mile hike to get to see it.
Wished I lived 75 miles closer
Directions:
immature still, flew north over Howden Edge (as viewed from Crook Clough at 53.431, -1.700); park at Strines Bridge then follow track north-west towards Cartledge Bents and cross Abbey Brook to view from Crook Clough (do not take track down to east side of streams to avoid flushing bird). Alternatively, park by Mortimer Road at 53.447,-1.632 and head west

Just reading about it, and it ain’t far away from home🤩 Strines is one of our drives out. Around a half hour. Been a few years since we actively set off to view something, but this is rather special.🤔 Thanks for details OP👍

I hope the twitchers get organised. Strines is grouse/game bird shooting area. Another month and it all kicks off. Some of the keepers are not very friendly.☹️

It’s thought to be a 2 year old, originating from a reintroduction programme in the Alps. I’m very tempted to take a look, haven’t been any further than 5 miles from home in the last few months, and that’s only been once a week to Tesco’s.!

It was highlighted on the North West news tonight, so there'll be even more going out there tomorrow. Wonder who's got their ice cream van up there for the crowds.

I don’t worry about all the folks going to see it. I would worry more about the shooting/keepers/landowners around there. The very fact that it’s so high profile might help keep it alive. Raptor persecution is rife up there.
