Hi,

Heading up the M5 from Baltic Wharf to Carsington Water site. So many routes and not necessarily looking for the shortest. Do I take the M42 east then onto the M1 and straight off again to take the A50 west, then the A515 to Ashbourne, a bit long winded but relaxing.

Or M42 east and work my way through Burton upon Trent towards the A515, not so relaxing.

Or the M5 and M6 to Stafford and take the A518 east, around Uttoxeter with a short bit of the A50 before heading north on the A515 to Ashbourne

Or any other recommendation, but rather sit back and enjoy the driving on our first trip out.

Cheers

We've used M6 to jcn13 and A518 to Uttoxeter many a time both towing and with the MH. Once you've picked your way through Stafford, the rest of the road to Uttoxeter is fine and quite relaxing. I can’t speak for the rest of that route or the alternatives, I’m afraid.

Hi - we have done a very similar route from Wiltshire to the Peak District many times over the years, so here is my suggestion - but it depends on two things - are you wanting to do it in one go and are you a member of C&CC?

We have found your M5/M6 route best .... but .... we leave the M5 just after Worcester (can't remember the actual junction number) and head for the C&CC site at Wolverley for an overnight stop.  Then head north to rejoin the M6 next morning. It means you avoid the M5/M6 interchange and the site is very pleasant with a canal adjacent for walking and a couple of pubs in the village for a meal.

    Hope that helps. smile

I would probably use M5, M42 to junction 9. Then rather than use the M6 toll exit onto the A446 Lichfield Road, follow until it joins the A38. Follow A38 to the A50 junction, then A50 to A515.

We use the Stafford Ashbourne route in reverse Methven, some interesting countryside. Ashbourne is a lovely little town if you can manage to park up.

Just arrived at Carsington but from Rutland. Ended up with a little bit of M1 up to the A52 then up past Kedleston Hall.
