With COVID 19 we had not booked any CC sites
As availability off CC sites was poor ,for the first time in many years we decided to look at private  sites ,to find out CC sites have become expensive , to most sites with comparable facilities.
For the first time i am questioning the benefits of being a member .

I occasionally find that small family run commercial sites are cheaper but often, when I compare commercial and club sites out of interest I find little significant difference and in some location such sites dearer on occasion. If you feel that then you do right to question unless you wish to retain something only available to members. I use a mixture of both club's sites and none club sites although if there is a CMC site where we wish to be that will usually be our first choice in normal times. I find it difficult to compare as a generality without considering the particular areas in question

Club are middle of the road in terms of prices, some cheaper, some more dearer.

I've often said that if club sites do not give you what you consider value for money then go elsewhere. It is as simple as that

They are expensive . No doubt about it .
But there are advantages too .....with the cmhc you can book 16 months in advance with no deposits what so ever . Thats a fantastic perk . And its unique to the club . We stay members for that reason . We have Edinburgh Fringe booked in for next year and even Longleat for New years eve 2021 ! No deposits needed and no stress if covid strikes again , us fighting to get deposits back .
With the club too, there was that 20% voucher offer on and hopefully 🤞 with the club too, we ‘may’ get the 15% vat reduction passed on🤞😬 .Making prices more competitive. Smaller sites might not see that 🤷‍♀️. I dont know .

But the reason we stay members is that booking without a deposit so far in advance .
Some of the site locations keep us members too, crystal palace and abbey wood to be honest . London on a budget even with the sites prices.

I know that requires future planning that not everyone can do . Hope you find something that meets your needs anyway , and manage to take some fab holidays 😊

Also, any changes in VAT (which I know doesn't happen very oftensmile) are applicable as you pay on arrival. If you have to pay upfront a number of weeks in advance you may lose that (take out insurance?) with sometimes non a non refundable deposit.

Again not expensive to me as they give me what I want. When they do not I'll look elsewhere.

When we have used commercial sites there has not been much difference. Although on some if we had used an awning or had a dog they would have been significantly more expensive. C&CC sites do work out substantially cheaper if you qualify for the age discount. Although we haven't tried any yet, as they were all cancelled due to Covid.

However, for us the main plus with the CAMC is the T&C's. Both the no messing about with deposits and the fact you can book one or two night stays at any time of the year. Some commercials have a minimum of 3 nights, or even a week at peak holiday times.

    Expensive?is very subjective

Prices with club vary depends on area and how popular,

Some commercials are far more expensive at peak times but family's will use them     then in off peak because it is cheaper to keep open than close it all down and then reopen hence    pitch fees are at times much cheaper than the club, who have opened more sites much longer in places that there is a demand

Some of the CACC sites have a  minimum of 3 nights as well as I found out after I had joined a couple of years ago.

We always use CC sites as we know what to expect of loo blocks etc. We also use the club for insurance and our foreign holidays. However some of the prices are becoming very high. We were amazed that the price of 6 weeks in France including ferry was just over £1100 and the price of Troutbeck head for 14 nights, before the school holidays was over £500. That does seem a bit steep.

what is the CACC? if you mean CAMC you're probably talking about affiliated sites which are privately owned and managed, no CAMC (owned) site has a minimum booking.

If that's for ferry, insurance, and sites you are doing very well. Personally I don't think you can ignore insurance costs..

Sounds good but you can't compare different countries and say the club's prices are steep/expensive? Comparing within the Uk with other similar providers is fair enough but not with abroad.

You'll probably have increased fuel costs as well to factor in and insurance for you as Steve says.

It’s probably C&CC, Corners. I'm assuming that's the case because they do have minimum night stays varying in duration, location and season. Simple, eh?😀

Under VAT rules they have to pass it on ,as the real price is net price , plus VAT

It’s about getting what you want/ need, at a price that you like. Mixing up touring Site providers does make touring easier, but there are swings and roundabouts to all providers. 👍😁

Sorry, no loyalty here. We use sites from just about every source out there. Driven mainly by where we want to go. CAMC sites near cities, towns and villages are often busy so even if we wanted to we couldnt use them.

On price, I think it is very much a case of you get what you pay for. As one poster says often the 'extras' can make a site much more expensive. In 'extras' are such things as dogs, awnings even a tow car, all of which is included on CAMC sites.

I was one of many people that had their Camping in the Forest holiday curtailed by the Camping and Caravanning Club.Site fees where around £20 no hook up no toilets etc.

But because I was desperate to book somewhere nearby I looked at a site just west of Lymington (won’t name it). This was more of a holiday type complex at over £50 per night.

By booking the Centenary New Forest Site worked out at £37.

I for one are not complaining.

With the facilities on Welsh club sites closed ,is there to be a reduction in site fees. On some sites run by volunteers the fees are greatly reduced because there are no facilities on site. Aberbran is one such site.

Your standard broken record response of ‘like it lump it’  doesn’t really move the debate on very much, If you pay good money to belong to a club, you can reasonably expect to have competitive rates or better. I’ve had the same experience recently and it’s made me rethink whether I’m getting value for money.

No doubt about it, Camping & Caravanning  Club with age concession rate is almost always cheaper than comparable CAMC - compare rates on neighbouring sites like the sites in Hanley Swan, near Malvern,  Nothing much to choose between them in terms of facilities. I like the deposit scheme, reduces speculative booking and minimum night requirement doesn’t apply everywhere.

Didn't know it was a debate Bill, thought it a friendly discussion. I think that over recent years All sites whether club or not have become more expensive.

About 50% of my touring sites are with this club normally, I don't find it much different in price from commercial sites. I don't think that CS was saying like it or lump it, but rather if you don't like it then look elsewhere. I am happy to use some club sites that are in the right place on a tour. I don't consider them cheap but like what they provide and often find commercial sites dearer. A lot depends on when you travel and where I suppose.

In truth Bill the decision is totally in your own hands

If you pay good money to belong to a club, you can reasonably expect to have competitive rates or better

Interesting statement, why would you expect that? I presume that on joining you, or one, would exercise due diligence and see what the rates are and decide to join based on that? or did you just join or rejoin and then look at the prices? If so very short sighted of you.

And actually Temp, I did say anything about competitive rates at all, I said value for money, as been wisely pointed out that is completely different. But really while it may be a broken record to you, it is the simple truth that everyone uses in buying whatever As exemplified by:

I’ve had the same experience recently and it’s made me rethink whether I’m getting value for money.

I really can't see a way forward on club prices apart from not paying them or how to move the debate forward about them? But I am ready to be educated so could you please rather than post personal insults and playing the man give me your views on how to take the debate forward and what to do about club prices?

I look forward to your answer.

Camping and Carravanning Club is cheaper for us oldies but generally if both sites are close together I will chose CMC for a number of reasons.

    1. I can adjust shower temperatures on CMC site and following radiotherapy 27 years ago my skin on my back cannot tolerate showers that are too hot.

    2. On most CMC the waste bins are easy to handle and spread through the site rather than a dumpster outside the entrance.

    3. Dislike 1pm arrival time.

    4. Dislike being shown around to a pitch.

There are other reasons but that will suffice.

We are members of both clubs and found that its the C&CC that we are using more and more.

In fact we haven't used this clubs sites this year at all and don't have any bookings made for the future.

Yet we have just been to a C&CC site and have 3 more booked.

We do however use the CL network where it suits.

The deposit doesn't bother us either as you say it does reduce the speculative bookings.

Staying for just the one night hasn't been a problem so far, though I know some sites do ask for more nights. We've found that if you call the site 24 - 48 before they are usually able to accommodate you for 1 night. It can be a risk so a back up plan is required if you are not of the adventurous nature wink

I've never been escorted to a pitch but I have been shown pitches that might suit my requirements.

The fact that you can book a H/S pitch is a bonus in our book but I do wish they were a little wider on some of the sites.

Do I find C&MC sites expensive for what they provide, you bet I do.

Whilst I always book a hard standing on C&CC sites I never have a problem getting a hard standing on CMC sites that I use. Agree about pitch widths since cars are generally parked on grass alongside the hard standing and not as useful underfoot in wet weather therefore

I find The  camping & caravanning club sites quite a lot cheaper especially with the age discount, they are also more attune with their members such as extending membership for the length of time that the lockdown existed. We have not used the caravan &motorhome sites for about 2 years now for these reasons.
