For me, when towing and needing to refill, motorways every time. When I was prepared to travel greater distances it was always to get to an area at the start of a tour or to return. I always consider fuel to be a relatively small part of costs of a holiday and so to pay premium rates for a few three quarter tank top ups a year was not worth the effort of avoiding

Most supermarket filling stations have at least one island of pumps that are easily accessible. Work out roughly when you will need to refill and then use GoogleEarth to zoom in and scope out a suitable location for refilling.

When we caravanned we rarely stopped enroute to refill in the UK but had done so in Europe, where generally, motorway service areas have slightly more space. Now we have a motorhome we have tend to top up at supermarkets off route. These stops are usually planned ahead with the help of Google Earth so the same method could be used with a caravan. Just a question accessing whether they are large enough for your outfit from the overhead shot?

to those that plan a route to the Nth degree with Google satellite images of access points & narrow lanes etc, what happens if you take a wrong road or get diverted for some reason? On occasion I've ****up & had to turn round involving fairly tight spaces ..... c'est la vie and no planning ahead can ever predict it and things have to be done on the hoof. I ended up on a small housing estate in Bristol last year and had to turn round 45' of car & caravan & no way was I going to chicken out & unhitch!
On a few occasions I've used pumps while hitched up and you just have to choose the pump that you think you can drive away from the easiest. Forecourts are all different and each need different considerations.

AD is absolutely right. The fuel gauge on my Tiguan drops very quickly when it gets to 1/3rd full
. Some folk do an awful lot of detailed planning for their trips; with us its maximum flexibility and prepared to change. We never pre book sites but we do go out of season.1 -
Often fill up with van on the back and in 30 years of towing only had 1 problem in Carrefour in Calais, very tight but with patience it was doable.
Only real thing to watch out for is barriers which are obviously a no go. I always try and stop a few yards away and recce the filling station if it's not obviously large and spacious.

Never come across a problem yet, a bit tight on some but still doable without stress. Just remember the extra width of the caravan and keep the car a little further away from the pumps when pulling in, and watch out for the caravan tail swing when leaving.

I nearly always have to fill up on the way to Cornwall but always fill the car to the brim the night before to negate any need to feul up, but it does happen from time to time. Just find a largish petrol station and try to stay near the road if you can, but it does depend on the size and layout of the petrol station. I have often gone into the Shell station in Waitrose n Lincoln early in the moring on theway because it is a big open place.
You fuel guage will have an arrow on it to tell you what side the cap is on the car if you get flustered and forget.
