I have recently purchased an automatic and experienced the slight lag in take-off common in most automatics that I have driven.

There is a product on the market usually called a 'peddle box' which smooths the lag out of the electronic accelerator, which sounds like a good idea! It isn't a performance enhancer tuning box, those are entirely different.

I would  be interested in an opinion from anyone that has gone down the peddle box route. I will have to inform my insurer and either pay an enhanced premium or delay fitment and change my insurer eventually of course.

    I'm sure it'll be a pedal box 😉  .... but the only pedal boxes I've heard of or come across are those associated with performance cars where all the pedals move rather than the fixed racing seat.

    As for the slight delay in take off with both slush box autos & automated DSG type autos, you very quickly drive to compensate for it.

    I've come across musicians with pedal boxes but that's a whole different thing.

    In my experience, with most autos the lag is very slight and your driving technique quickly adjusts to compensate for it.

    You don't say what the car is as most auto's have a sport setting or something that alters the throttle response so if it has one then just use that, if it hasn't then like said earlier just adapt a different driving technique

    Sport setting doesn't really alter throttle response, it tells the gearbox to alter the gearbox/revs shift points.

    It might help on yours, but 'sport' on ANY auto will only alter shift points ..... it doesn't make the throttle response any faster.

    So when the manufacturers state that it alters suspension and steering feels they are talking bull.

    Aren't we still talking throttle response? On my Omega it just altered gearbox shift points as it did with the Senators before it. It alters suspension on my ML too .... no idea about steering. Different cars do different things but none alter the actual throttle response  .....thats done with your right foot.

    taken from my owners manual

    Your vehicle is equipped with a SPORT Mode feature. This
    mode is a configuration set up for typical enthusiast driving.
    The engine, transmission, and steering systems are all set to
    their SPORT settings. SPORT Mode will provide improved
    throttle response and modified transmission shift points for
    an enhanced driving experience, as well the greater amount
    of steering feel. This mode may be activated and deactivated
    by pushing the SPORT button on the instrument panel
    switch bank.

    Can you read-SPORT mode will provide improved throttle response.

    The OP doesn't say what car they have, however on my Skoda the powers that be have decided to make it 'greener' by changing the throttle response so it's non-linear and it can be quite annoying at times. Instead of pressing a little harder to accelerate you can find yourself pressing harder... harder... harder... then wallop! you've dropped down two gears and you're screaming off towards the horizon. Not normally an issue but if you need to make progress suddenly then finding the exact spot to hit for the acceleration required is near impossible.

    Quite a few people on the Skoda forums have fitted a box (which makes response linear and can be adjusted to vary the amount of pedal travel required for full throttle) with positive results.

    When I enquired with my insurer (Aviva) they hadn't a clue what it was and wouldn't insure me if I had one fitted so I didn't bother.

    No need for anyone to respond along the lines of "well, you're not driving it properly then" wink

    Of course you are right, some manufacturers change transmission settings only, some transmission and throttle response along with a host of other things. When CANBUS arrived all these options soon became available on cars.
