Troutbeck Head and Midges

Fancying a change of site we used in the Lakes.  Used Coniston Park Coppice a lot and enjoyed it but thinking of using Troutbeck.  Just looked at the reviews and mention was made of horrendous midges. Can anyone advise if this is a problem all summer or it is a temporary thing with warm and wet weather.  I dint fancy a week of being eaten alive.

Are there any pubs within walking distance at all (when they open anyway)

Thanks

We've stayed there a few times - not in high summer tbough - and had absolutely no problem with midges - there is a small group of pitches by a stream at the bottom of the site which may suffer from them, but apart from that I think you'd be ok.

No pubs within easy walking distance - there is one near the junction with the main road but we've never used it. But just a short drive away there is the White Horse in Scales and the Horse & Farrier in Threlkeld which does great food but gets very busy. There is a second pub in Threlkeld; I don't remember it's name but it also does or did  good pub grub food.

You're certain to enjoy the site of you like the lakes. smile

I have pitched down by the stream in July and in late August in good weather on around six occasions and seen no midge problem whatsoever.

We used to live near Penrith and Ullswater remains my favourite of the lakes. You might like the campsite at Gillside Farm, Glenridding - such a great location at the foot of the fells and just a short stroll down to pubs, shops and cafes in the village - though I admit the campsite would shock anyone looking for CMC style .

We've pitched by the stream on several occasions throughout the season and had never had any issue with midges. The nearest pub is feasible to walk, if you're fit, but I find it dangerous walking on the road as there is no footpath.

We have been to Troutbeck ten times over the past five years on a variety of pitches and have never had any problems with midges. A really good site.

We’ve been to Troutbeck quite a few times (can’t remember how many!).  We have usually been April/May or September time never seen a midge!   We have used the Horse and Farrier in Threlkeld, based on a recommendation from Moulsey previously.  We had a super meal there, not walking distance from Troutbeck though.

    You're welcome! smile

Forgot to add that if you get a pitch towards the bottom end of the site, depending on time of year, you might be lucky enough to see the local farmers rounding up the sheep and the shearers in action - a fascinating watch! smile

The only time we were bothered, and compared to Bunree it's not really a bother, is late one hot August, and then only near the SP next to the stream at the bottom, and really only at night. I suppose it depends on temperature and humidity.
