Hi all. Could somebody who uses the VW Touareg with the factory fitted towbar and hydraulic suspension please let me know what the Kerbweight/mass in service states on there V5C logbook as when looking at the spec on autotrader no matter what the model is it gives it as 1995kg but that is probably for the base model. Thanks all. Looking at the R-Line Tech 286bhp one.

I have the 2020 286 SEL Tech with folding Tow bar and hydraulic suspension with rear wheel steering. I also have a sunroof which may add weight to the car.

The mass in service figure on my V5C is 2332Kg

So am I.  When I bought mine - albeit 5 years ago now, air suspension was an option but no mention of hydraulic.

The Mass in Service of mine is 2251kg but it's a totally different beast (the Escape model) with all the off-road toys such as low ratio box, underbody protection, heavy duty stiffened suspension, diff locks etc.

The car is so heavy, the air in the pneumatic suspension units gets compressed into a liquid, makes the ride quite firm!wink

I din't know that VW had any kind of rear steering. I remember that Honda did a few years back. I bet that could open a can of worms when it comes to wheel alignment .... some places seem to struggle when just the front wheels steer. 😁

And I thought you knew everything MM. Optional extra on some Touaregs and supposed to be able to turn in same space as a Golf.

    I know a lot .... but not everything! 😉😉

I see the 4 wheel steer works a little different from the Honda set up. The VW same/opposite steer operates up to a set speed but the Honda's was dependant on the amount of lock applied.

Well I was fresh from the E&P pneumatic levelling thread and didn't notice.

    That's my excuse anyway

I have a 2019 R-Line Tech, 286ps. With air suspension, rear wheel steering, factory folding towbar and sunroof and that comes in at 2070 for mass in service on the v5.

I could not work out how there could be 262 kg between our cars! but I think they started tailoring V5Cs to each vehicle some time recently and yours must be before that because 2070 is the Touareg brochure mass in service.

Current V5Cs reflect the true mass in service and include all optional extras like s/roof, suspension, mud flaps etc. I think this is part of the WLTP regulations.

This is quite good for me because it means my 1800kg MPTLM van is well below the weight of the empty car. This matters because? the trip to my servicing dealer is a 70 mile round trip and the van could be a bit lively with my previous car (1834kg).

As a thread busting PS, does your car-net work? mine is stuck on privacy mode

Hi Lornalu1, I know this doesn't answer your question specifically but I have the 262 R-line and tow 1900Kg with no problem at all. I believe mine is 2185Kg. Although the version you describe may be slightly lighter, unless you are towing well over 2000kg I would be really surprised if you had any stability issues. You are absolutely right to check the actual figures though. Autotrader not great for accurate specs. Have you tried VW UK, some technical departments are quite good. Parkers reviews are also quite good for some basic model specs.

    Hi Lornalou1

I thought I would post a cautionary update on my Touareg

I suggest that you have a very good test drive before you buy a Touareg.

I have rapidly become disillusioned with my Touareg and I consider it virtually undriveable. If you value vicious acceleration then this car is for you but if you want a car to relax in and drive sensibly forget it. The throttle response is all or nothing and smooth progress is impossible as it always changes down before it does anything, it is also very difficult to get moving with moderate pace from a standstill. I dread to think how badly this thing is going to tow because the engine has virtually no torque at low revs, it needs 1750 rpm before it will climb, from stationary, the small kerb onto my drive. The engine is very smooth but you will need to enjoy hearing it running at 2 -3000 rpm because it never changes up at anything less. I have owned several VWs and always been happy with them but this is dreadful, it's only use is on a motorway.

Stephen P, I assume you have taken it back to the retailer as indeed it does sound dreadful. I wonder if the characteristics you describe are specific to your car as the CAMC, Practical caravan and Which? magazine rate it highly?

There is most definitely something amiss with your car stephenp. If was bought new i do not understand why you haven’t taken this up with the dealer and even if used i would still be addressing the issue with the vendor. If they try telling you it is ‘normal’ then insist on trying another Touareg and insist one of their   technicians drive it with you. If a used buy it is possible it has been badly remapped.
