Water inlet leaks under pressure

My guess would be the non return valve
depending on age of van, you may find below useful
if you look at the pipe work inside the van, and trace the pipes you will find a black non return valve, it’s approx 75 mm long.
easy to replace as most caravans are just push fit.or it could be the pressure switch, you could check the switch by reducing the pressure setting on the back of the switch, and seeing if it helps.

Is this a new problem on a caravan you have used successfully before, or is it a "new to you" one?
I do not understand the "blown back" bit. Where is it blowing back to? If the pump is blowing back into the container then the polatity of the electrical connection is reversed.

A further thought on this over a glass of lunch.
This system is designed with a micro-switch at each tap that supplies power to the pump directly or through a relay. If one or more of these switches are out of allignment then the pump will run but there will be no outlet for the water in the pipes now under pressure. It will find the weakest point, which could well be the 'O' rings on the water inlet.
A bit of guddling under the sinks to detatch (carfully) one wire from one tap at a time will show which one is making the pump run when not needed. If not, then it is possible there is a relay, which has jammed in on position.
These wee 'O' rinks should get lubricated occasionally. I just use a smear of petroleum jelly.

Just to clarify then!
Without more details I am assuming a Whale system because the OP referred to an external pump. If not then my comments are not applicable.
The O rings on the Whale system are not in the Trigger! they are in the adaptor plate on the caravan side.
There are 2 O rings and this is not immediately obvious unless you are eye level with the nozzle in the adaptor plate.
These O rings are fully capable of holding all the pressure that the external pump can muster, if there is a leak at the inlet adaptor (water running down the outside of the caravan) then fix the O rings first.

I don't think all modern caravans use micro switches. I think my system works on a pressure sensing switch. It switches the pump on when it detects lower pressure caused by a tap being open. The pressure switch can be adjusted by turning the small knurled knob on top of it. If it is out of adjustment the pump will run continually. I've had to change the "o" rings a number of times to prevent leaks. You can get a small bag of "O" rings from a dealer.

That is the system on both of my last two vans, Tony, which is why I didn't think of the older system right away. With no further information from the OP we are all guessing what (s)he has got, but the thread has now got a lot of useful information for anyone reading it in the future.
I find it weird that all throuout engineering there is the same oddity in supply. You need two 'O' rings and they come in packets of five! Need twelve cylinder head bolts - Ah, that's a packet of ten!
