CONGRATULATIONS to the 99 year old gentleman who started walking round his garden to try to raise £1000 for N H S Charities Together before his own 100th birthday. At lunchtime today, April 16th he has raised a mere THIRTEEN MILLION POUNDS Plus !!  WELL DONE SIR, VERY WELL DONE !!

{ The shouting was deliberate & deserved IMHO   smile }

Absolutely wonderful. Served his country well now twice.

Out if interest I wonder why his was such a great hit and fundraiser? I mean to take NOTHING away from him.

ABM yes there are some things well worth shouting about.

Morale booster at a time when we're all a wee bit flat? An opportunity to 'do our bit' for the NHS? A sense of admiration for a true gentleman who has coped with a recent broken hip and kept 'plugging away'? [his daughter says he needs a sense of purpose].

A remarkable feat and a remarkable man.

I’m not a fan of old folk generally but this one has my total & utter respect. No me, me, me nor popping at everyone younger, no BS either. He set out a challenge to himself & with love & support for who he is he succeeded beyond his wildest dreams. What a wonderful individual he is👍🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

He’s wonderful in a lot of ways. For me, he represents all those elderly folks who probably share his indomitable spirit, I know my Mum certainly is the same, she seldom complains, never asks nor expects help, just sets herself a task and gets on with it. An absolute star. We donated, it’s a way of thanking him, and thanking those who will benefit from his efforts. The little girl organising the birthday greetings deserves a mention as well. Two different generations united in kindness👏👏👏

One of the local weather girls referred to him as Major Tom the other day, obviously unaware of the progression UK army ranks. Although had he been Major Tom the press would have an even bigger field day!!!

His achievement is fantastic. Without knocking the efforts of the likes of Comic Relief and Children in Need etc, what he has done is single handed. He has no massive production teams behind him who only achieve about double the donations he has got. All that he is likely to need out of this is a new pair of shoes and new wheels for his walking aid! He is an inspiration to us all.

    Legend.

I very gladly donated but I was surprised at the 'cut' the just giving page wanted/took. I paid but it was £1.50 for £10 donation, that stuck and I can't remember the other amounts. So they've made a very good wack of 'commission'  and I hope they'll pass it on?? I won't hold my breath. I wondered why a fb advert for Virgin said their charity page was 'free'

It seems to me that cheap digital banking isn't! If I stick a tenner in a charity tin the charity gets a tenner..... if I walk into a booking office and pay cash I get my ticket for face value, if I order online they add a handling fee, either per ticket or per transaction, then postage if I don't collect! Sometimes you're not given the option and you have to buy online and take it on the chin!!

Sorry for going off topic, it takes nothing away from the raising of the money.

Don't underestimate the support that Tom's daughter, Hannah, her family and and the team behind her company have also given.

The Just Giving fees are, I think, quite modest giving the service they give to many charities that have their own Just Giving pages. It is a big undertaking but it can't be done for free. Also it saves many charities the need to have separate fundraising websites. Another advantage with sites like Just Giving is that you can elect to use Gift Aid (providing you are a tax payer) which considerably increases the value of your gift.

Aren't just giving donating £100,000 themselves.

The gift aid wouldn't work for me. It kept comming up with invalid post code and it was most certainly valid. So the government got to keep their bit.☹️ I thought the site might just be overloaded, however gift aid was comming up for other contributors on that front page list.

You mean Colonel, I think. More in favour than his mediaeval namesake.

Military protocol says his official title is Captain Sir Thomas Moore as his 'Colonel' is honorary.

He seemed pretty relaxed about things - I'm sure he'll keep his head - although isn't there a rather worrying precedent in that respect for a man with his name? surprised
