As you may know we live in Washington and we have often discussed moving to the lakes which is our favourite part of the world, nothing would please me more than going for walk each day but we like where we are, I can get to the A1(M) within minutes and like you love how we can get anything we want from Newcastle or Sunderland...

We decided that rather than move and all the extra expense we would use the extra money or money saved to go over as much as we want in the caravan or even holiday cottages in different parts of the lakes. But I still would love to live over there.

Just spent more time away in the caravan in the many various rural locations around the country. That's what we do.

Mum's the word from me. I didn't think your good lady was anything like that. You're the perfect partnership, aren't you? wink

I think we will go with that Nellie, or do an M and opt to keep a van down in SW again like we used to do. Unless I can find that couple of £m I put down somewhere, then Dartmoor it is👍😁

We did consider moving to the NE Highlands a few years ago but never got round to doing anything about it, and now think that it's too late to do so. However it's no good bothering about " what ifs".

There was a tenuous link Easy as thebells wanted some idea of whether the services held up in the sticks in this pandemic and what advantages/disadvantages there might be but it seems to have snowballed as is its wont.

You should think hard about Lerryn, TDA. Daughter's MIL has moved from there as it was too remote as advancing years require services to be more accessible.

We live 7 miles north of a city, the village has everything in it that we need, grocery shop, fish shop, Dr's surgery, pub, hotel, pharmacy, post office, hair dresser and a butcher. So well catered for, we don't have mains gas though. A few of us have LPG a few have oil but the majority are all electric.

We are a 3 minute walk to the top of the village, where we have 360 deg views of the hills (still snow capped) we can ride for miles on country roads, all be it some are hilly.

If we turn left from the house instead of right  we can walk down to the river in about 5 minutes, we even have a small beach there.

Majority of times its fairly quiet, more young folk are moving into the village, due to the building of new homes, there are more to be built so can only see it getting more families. When we moved here 30 years ago it was mainly retired folk.

Lovely it is but I'd love to live on the coast. We have been talking about it for years but didn't want to move while Mum was alive.

Things have changed though in the last 6 mths, Mum passed away and our children who both live down south are pretty sure they will not come back here to live.

So we have talked about looking again, can't at the moment and will we ever move, who knows. Having done 17 moves in our time in the Army I'm not sure that I want the hassle again. The house is the way we want it, the garden is a bit on the big side but I'm working on making it easier to look after.

Maybe we will do the same as some others  and find a nice smallish mobile home site on the coast.undecided It would have to be the East coast and about 3 - 4 hours south of us, so that puts it at Northumberland area. All suggestions welcomed laughing

I know Newcastle (upon Tyne) quite well have been a few times and Margaret was actually born there and spent her first 20 years there before her family moved to Southampton where we met.  It is a fine City which I have enjoyed exploring but very different to where we live now. It would be pointless me wanting to go and live there as Margaret has no intention of moving back which might seem odd but then I have no desire to move back to Southampton where I was born.  The only other place I once quite fancied living was Port Grimaud in the South of France in one of the François Spoerry houses in the Port. However that was never more than a pipe dream!!!

If you can't beat them join them wink

We have a detached bungalow on a quiet road at the top edge of an estate of bungalows. Neighbour on RHS can overlook if he walks to near the fence line on part of the boundary and that is where we natter. On other side we have to go to front garden to natter. Behind us are fields. The plot is a third of an acre and the rear garden private enough that when I did work on the home 7 years ago was able to strip off and srand in a builders bucket to wash down.laughing

The road out front is quiet. Probably 24 households might pass and the odd delivery. Good neighbours. Asda 1 mile away, River Dee 1.5miles, Lidl 1.5 miles, Doctor 1.5 miles, local clinic for X-Rays, blood tests, diabetic eye checks a quarter of a mile. Bus stop similar and post office a third of a mile.

Govt review of lockdown coming up. My money is on extending it with no lessening for a further 2 weeks. That will give the last 2 weeks actions of us(the public) to filter thru to the casualty/death figures.

Considering the stats are reflecting what happened up to 2 weeks ago I think within a month they(the authorities) will begin a slow release of folk, mainly for cranking up industry👍🏻

I think the earliest the lockdown will end will be the end of the month (April) , then it will be a gradual opening  of retail shops and a few weeks later the pubs and restaurants ,leading to everything open by the end of May , but if people don’t abide by the social distancing then it could all be put back by a month

...or if the numbers dont improve and the curve flatten quickly enough...?

with testing processes now expanding the numbers of infections will rise, not because more folk have Covid but because we know they have it.

its not beyond possibility that things will get worse (numbers and restrictions) before they get better...

and speaking of France....haven't other govts have tightened rules, introduced curfews etc?

I was being optimistic, but it’s probably going to be at least September before we can really get back to some sort of reality

Corona Virus Concerns-seems, from the last few pages, that we have moved past the concerns phase into the resigned stage and what can we chat about to fill up the time stage!

On the rural lifestyle front we love were we are but we have no bus service, its 18 miles to the nearest supermarket and our Doctors surgery is reducing its hours BUT as we can drive and are reasonably fit no problem at the moment.

We hope to see out our days here but the critical things are being able to drive, its just me, and keeping in good health-something that has come to the front of a lot of peoples thinking.

On the restrictions i would go with another three weeks..................ish.

Agree with you BB, more testing will show more (known) cases.  Also, only yesterday it was said that the UK could be the second worst country affected in Europe.

OH's sister and BIL have been in their apartment in Spain since 24 Feb, had 2 flights cancelled and are now booked back on 1st May.  Lockdown there has been in force for 4 weeks now and was extended again until 26th April, making a total of 6 weeks.  Very strict they are there, very frequent police checks.

I think we too are in for the long haul where lockdown is concerned.

I’m happy with that👍🏻, it seems a lot of countries are extending by 2wks. I think 2 or 3wks immaterial as we are going to be beneath this cloud for the rest of 2020 & beyond ET🤷🏻‍♂️

If Govt get access to mass antibody tests they can then release vast numbers of folk from any form of lockdown-that’s the silver bullet.

Yes, we know it’s drawbacks, as well as it’s delights. We did look long and hard about Cornwall some 20 years ago, back when I was still working, looked at possibility of buying a second home, doing it up, eventually moving lock stock and barrel down there. But the prices then rocketed, and I decided to finish work early, and as we only had a tiny mortgage, we decided not to lumber ourselves with another one. We have done Winters in Cornwall, as well as Summer, and the rain rather than the snow were a factor at the time. Snow we don’t mind, rain however...... We’ve experienced the distances between things like hospital services as well, and (this one is ironic🤔) trying to get around anywhere in the peak Summer months isn’t easy as the place swarms with visitors.😂

No, if we relocate, it will be somewhere on edge of NY Moors I think. Pickering would be ideal. Nice little town, easy access to gorgeous landscapes, and the sea. NY Moors Railway to see if we could volunteer, a smaller property with a smaller garden. Not too far from good transport links. Get a long term let on house and then take to the roads for a few years.......

Northumberland would be nice as well.

With the death toll so high I think we will be in lockdown for at least another month. Spain, I believe, has just added another two weeks, they are not allowed out for exercise. My cousin tells me there are police and armed guards on her way to the supermarket. If they let us out too soon this could have all been a waste of time. Personally I am worried about what will happen when the lockdown is lifted. Until a vaccine I can't see a normal way of life.

Driving and age was another reason we have not moved from here,  OH has never driven (still "advises"surprised)we have just about all we need here, we have two buses an hour (one on sundays) that serve our urgent care centre and clinics south bound and the major Hospital northbound, at Stevenage also they all pass our GP in the village, ,,   in all we have Mon-Sat four and five buses an hour, into the town centre and railway station

Just over 200yds,away we have a row of shops with Co op 0600-2200,   ,Chippy, open every day!!   Lloyds chemist and OHs hair dresser

Another big plus is we have plenty of country /ancient woodland walks  starting less than 300yds away and the A1 3miles either from the house or the caravan storage

We are here now hopefully till we leave this mortal coilcool

Doesn't seem as if the antibody tests are working. Its a case of " No test is better than a wrong test"> Thats why the target testing by end of April is unrealistic. My guess would be schools reopening after Easter. Lockdown for us vulnerable s to continue indefinitely. Some return to work as we can not as a country afford a prolonged closure of industry.
