MOT deferment

My car is due for first MOT and third service on 27 April. Garage is closed, booking cancelled.  Road tax is due 1st May, so I have tried to pay thye tax on line but it won't let me because I don't have an MOT.  The government has given six months grace on MOTs, but they don't seem to have told the DVSA.  I've tried all the phone numbers but it's impossible to speak to anyone.

Anybody else had the same problem?

You say you don't have an MOT but then say its due on 27th April. In that case there should be nothing to stop you taxing it now.

EDIT: Just looked on Gov site, more confusing than I thought.

Last I recall you could not tax for 1st May until 5th April but I presume that it was after this date when you tried to tax?

In the normal course of events OP would be trying to tax a car for a date after the MOT would have expired .... the system won't let you. I've had this for a good few years with one of our cars.

Realised the problem after posting, something I have never encountered as always MOT'd early and of course never in this predicament.

Thanks for the replies.  I have just found this on the "Which" website:

"Your vehicle’s MOT expiry date will be updated a few days before it was originally due to expire. You can check your car’s MOT date on the government website. If the expiry date has not been extended three days before it was originally due to expire, email covid19mot@dvsa.gov.uk."

So, although I have the DVSA reminder, it seems that I will have to wait until nearer the date when the MOT would be due, in this case when the car will be three years old on 27 April.

So, here I am, itching to give the treasury £465 and they won't take it. Oh well, such is life.  Stay safe everyone.

Glad you found the answer, it's all new to us and I applaud how differing departments have managed to integrate systems in an attempt to keep things running, no mean task in trying to cover all eventualities.

In my case the MOT is the end of this month and the tax the start of May ... it'll be suck & see this year, fortunately it's a car not in regular use. The other option is to tax it just for 6 months and move the two away from each other.

But to the OP .... maybe the system will let it be taxed when the car actually requires the MOT ie after 27 April 🤔

Thanks for that info. Hopefully I won't have a problem as MOT is due mid April but tax not until 1st of June. I MOT'd / serviced early a couple of years ago to move it away from when we go away. At least now I know who to contact if it does not work. Although I am hoping I can get it done before June, if restrictions are eased.

Our tow car was due its first MOT and third service on the 31/04/20 and was duly booked in, then we had a call from the garage to say this had been cancelled but they would carry out the MOT & service at a later date with no problems with future warranty, of course the next problem was to tax the car but I thought you needed at least a month before the MOT was due to be able to tax the vehicle but with only a few days to go the other half went on line and taxed the car.

but I thought you needed at least a month before the MOT was due to be able to tax the vehicle

Normally .... as long as the car had an MOT for the date you were taxing it from, you can tax it eg MOT expired on the 2nd May & you were taxing it from the 1st May

Sorry wrong expiry date yell it should have been 31/03/20 and looking at gov.uk site it appears to have also been relaxed as it states

"An MOT or goods vehicle testing (GVT) certificate (if you need one) - it must be valid when the new tax starts"

Just an update to my original post. I have today successfully taxed the car.  The government  MOT database shows the car as having passed its MOT on 18 April, with next MOT due in October.  So, the system does work.

Same here, the MOT data base shows it was extended on the 16th April to October. Although I don't need to re tax until the end of May
