4 week tour of Wales
Hi,
A few months ago I posted asking for advice on a grand tour of Scotland and received lots of helpful tips on sites, must sees etc. Obviously with the current situation we are postponing that trip until next year. So, we have decided to tour Wales for a month in October, all being well. Its just me and the hubby and an elderly dog. What are your favourite sites, locations, views, restaurants, pubs etc etc and do you have any hidden gem tips you'd like to share. We are looking for a quiet, steady tour, we are national trust members and love wildlife and only want sites with facilities. Many thanks in advance.

Hi - here's one suggestion - Noyadd Farm CL just outside Builth Wells. It has HS serviced pitches (shared taps) and a very good toilet/shower block. Glorious views across the valley and you can walk through the farm fields which were lush with long grass and buttercups when we visited a couple of years ago. Down in the town itself you can walk along the Wye Valley walk and a shortish drive away are the reservoirs of the Elan Valley. There is also the red kite feeding centre at Gygrin Farm which allows dogs in the hides and is an unmissable experience.
It was one of the last sites we stayed at with our old boy Harry so most of the walks would be suitable for your elderly dog!

Also, on the Gower peninsula, have a look at 3 Cliffs Bay caravan site at Penmaen. It's many years since we stayed there (back in our tenting days in fact) but is in a spectacular location and, again, there are many good easy walks in that area.

The problem with this virus at the moment is that you just don't know which caravan sites/cls etc. are going to make through and reopen so best to have Plan B and C.

I was thinking of doing a tour of Wales myself and had come up with an itinerary but sites with facilities wasn't a necessity for us. However I did note a CL on Anglesey that we were thinking of that is having a shower block built this year and if they carry that out then it's entirely possible that it will be completed by October so have a look under the UK Holidays section/CLs/Angelsey and search for "Brambles" the name of the CL

We did three weeks in Wales (South and Mid) a couple of years ago. We decided first what things of interest we wanted to see, and then looked at sites after that. It worked very well for us, folks on here came up with some great suggestions for CLs and small private sites. We had no problems finding very nice sites, at decent prices.
We toured in a MH, so planned our route based on having a few days in each area, rather than longer stays in a few places.
Our priority was nice beaches, castles, houses, nice walks. Some areas of South Wales, Pembrokeshire is not unlike Cornwall. Long sandy beaches, rugged cliffs, Rocky coves. Make sure you put Bosherton Ponds (NT) and the walk to Barafundle Beach on your itinerary, a few miles from Tenby. Pembroke is interesting with its Castle and some nice eateries. St David’s Cathedral and Palace, both well worth a visit.
Take some decent wet weather gear, regardless of when you go. Trust me, it will rain!

No rain in Wales means no water in Birmingham. There are a good selection of Club sites throughout Wales. Some of the Cl,s are more basic. A lot have left the network and set up as small 10/12 pitch commercial sites. You need to decide where do you approach Wales ie North, Mid or South and then look up web sites etc. You could also take a chance and I am sure you could get a great holiday without prior bookings, this more flexible.You will be amazed at how often you will say " could have stayed longer here". Also remember our A roads are single carriagways with some good hills.Plenty of Agricultural and Forest harvestry lorries to hold you up. Slow is the mantra

Just a word or two of warning, they use the field directly behind the site as a camping/overflow field, there were a couple of permanent caravans on the site when we were there, and they allowed more than 5 vans on the CL.

I like the coast between Fishguard and St David's, often uncrowded and with some beautiful landscapes and views. Strumble Head is a place worth seeing, you might see dolphins at certain times of the year. Nearby is the Iron Age fort at Garn Fawr still with visible walls. There's a nice quiet beach not far away and plenty of local CLs in the area. St David's is a must, the cathedral and town have plenty to offer and then drop down to Porth Clais for another stretch of the coast path.
