How darned selfish can anyone be!

It never ceases to amaze me how darned selfish and generally inconsiderate some people can be!!

Last weekend we stopped on a very nice rural CL site in Lincolnshire that was immaculate with close mown grass where the grass had been collected, had a decent information hut and in general was totally tickerty boo, it even gave EHU’s and all for a very reasonable £14 per night that was even better because the owners gave a discount for stopping longer.

Now as an ex site owner and an avid user of the truly excellent CL network, I know only too well how many owners are offering their sites at only marginal levels of return which sadly results in quite significant numbers giving up the fight and closing their doors as quite literally the sums simply don’t add up.

The reason for my post is that last weekend I met a man from Yorkshire who had a large twin axle van and he proudly talked about his van drawing as much as 4 kilowatts of electricity as his van takes a very large amount to heat it and how brilliant it was that he was able to have the heating on continuously without tripping the EHU and by continuously I mean he left it on full throughout the day, even when he was out................. Not only that but at night he left his awning light on throughout the night.

I honestly can’t even begin to understand some people and they would be the first to complain if the charges for their favourite CL’s were increased, oh and he doesn’t use full facility Club sites as they are too expensive!!

Moderator Comment - Unfortunately threads like this achieve very little other than allowing someone to get something off their chests. No one can change the situation and it's unlikely to change future behaviour. I have therefore closed the thread to avoid further conflict of views

I think he was either winding you up, MM, or talking through the back of his head.

From the club’s info sheet -

"Appliance power consumption is quoted in watts and kilowatts (1 kilowatt (kW) = 1000 watts (w)). A total electrical load of 1 kW will require a 5 Amp supply at 230V. Hence the normal supply of 16 Amp in the UK would be suitable for a total load of approximately 3 kW (although this may exceed the circuit limitations of the caravan)."

Not only that but at night he left his awning light on throughout the night.

Not ALL night surely? 😏 What does a dozen leds cost to run all night? I'm guilty of leaving mine on all night too, not cos I wanted to, but it just got left on & you can't tell from inside the caravan.

One of the CLs we stay at regularly charge more in the winter than in the summer for that very reason. They were in despair at people heating their awnings for long periods.  A 16amp supply should give a max of 3.5kw. I assume you could push that to 4kw without tripping the system. What a waste!

Tut tut, i am another selfish caravanner. I have left my awning light on numerous occasions.....

So did you challenge him or simply keep quiet and come here to vent off? How will he change his behaviour if you did not point out - politely - the costs to the owners and implications for their business?

Did the OP sit up all night waiting for the awning light to go off ?

I can see why Millie says what they say. The awning light is neither here nor there. The OP is however entitled to their view.

Surely the answer for the open all year CL owners is to install metering. if that is not considered viable then don't open all year. Putting up winter rates is probably not a competitive move.

Someone I know has been on a local CL and they use gas for heating, cooking (£10/week), etc and they use about £0.40 electric per day.  CL has metered electric

The heating and water heaters may have been left switched on but they are controlled by thermostats so would not be on all the time they will just come on to maintain the temperature and not have to go flat out to heat up from cold

My concern isn't necessarily about the case in point, but how so many of us expect to be able to use excessive amounts of electricity with next to no consideration for the CL owner.

This has been discussed countless times on here . In my view no amount of pleading will prevent the selfish ones make changes to their lifestyles. The solutions are out there and it is down to individual site owners to decide how to cover their costs.

Well I wouldnt be that blunt/rude but I think MM rather misled us by centering his/her post on '4kw man' so we thought that was the reason for the post.

As PD said, the subject of electricity consumption on CLs has been discussed at length several times and some site owners are taking steps to limit it.

I cant think of anything to say to the OP other than "get a life"

Topical at least, no doubt the OP is hoping for that outcome laughing

We like to think we are considerate across the board as to how we conduct ourselves, both in using our pitch and the available services. Unfortunately, one does not have to look far to see the varying degrees of selfish behaviour by campers.  Also, I notice the usual rude remarks which only reflect poorly upon the members making them.  Shame on you!  I like to think that I have the intelligence to disagree with a post in a polite and constructive manner.  None of us can expect to be in accord with every post we read, but that does not excuse a rude response when disagreeing with a post.

I understand your point as most will , but as is becoming more noticeable these days,  there those who are "amongst us",  who expect every one to pander to the way they conduct them selves ,with no thought at all for anyone else,

You only have to note some of the posts on here to see it

The "left the awning light on" was not the main part of the OP, although if on a cl in the middle of the country? it is a bit off putting at night noting how  modern LED lights are quite bright,

Rude responses on here are quite common now,  ,and you have probably noted ,  that they come from those who have not read other posts in the thread but think by their intervention ? is a poorly thought out try at point scoring
