Took the caravan for its annual service recently 2015 Hymer.   They tell me it needs a new axle due either a pothole or hitting debris 😕☹️

Hiya Boff,Ive seen quite a few post's on CT about broken axle's in the last few year's all ALKO and almost all were told its due to overloading so no comebacks, what really amazes me is how many post's have you seen of caravaners going to dealers paying a few quid and having there weight plate up graded without any changes to chassis or axles, makes you think don't it...

It has been quite well documented ,some have been successful  with a claim , there is normally an advertisement in the club magazine for axle replacement

My sympathy Boff. We actually had a caravan written off last year as a result of pothole damage.

Just for reference, when we bought the caravan we had a slight upgrade of 50kgs. Then took it to a Public Weighbridge where we were astounded to find it weighed less than the MIRO advertised by the manufacturer. We weighed everything before putting anything in and still had the upgrade plus 30 kgs below MPTLM. It must have been made of plywood, hence the falling apart.

We've done quite a bit of touring around large swathes of this country in the last couple of years and the roads are sheer hell for potholes. I'm not in the least surprised that more and more axle claims are arising.

It should be covered by insurance.    It hit something hard.   But we didn’t feel anything so not sure when it happened.  The wheel wasn’t exactly unscathed.   Don’t think this one can be blamed on overloading or a relaxed axle.

With that amount of damage  on the inside edge of the wheel ,i am sprised there is not any damage to the chassis or underside of the c/van

    Frankly so am I.

I probably tow 80% of the time my partner the other 20% of the time.  When it is being towed then 99% we are in the tow vehicle together.  Neither one of us have any real idea when it happened.  It could have been anytime after the last service.

With the state of some of the UK roads I am not totally surprised though. Some roads are that bad you probably get immune to it even if the caravan isn't
