Hi Everyone

This might seem pretty basic stuff but I am a newbie MH. We have a Thule ominster wind out awning on our MH. Now can you leave this awning out, on site overnight, daytime if not on site?Would using tie down straps be useful to avoid wind damage? what is the best practice if anyone can offer advice?

Thanks

We nearly always use storm straps and if the weather looks bad we take the awning in. You'll it hear it jumping around even if storm straps are used in bad weather!

When using a club site, if you intend to use and leave out a wind out canopy/awning, you need to book a 'standard pitch with awning', otherwise you'll likely be asked to wind it in at night and, in any case, you'd need to maintain the fire gap between units.

Why? ive never heard of this 'rule' Jill.

if the wind-out is allowed on a non awning pitch (which they are provided that fire gaps are maintained) who's to say at what time (if at all) it has to be wound in...and for what possible reason?

as it happens, we would generally wind it in at night, but through choice not for any other reason.

As Jill states she is almost correct,   it depends whether the fire gap on a non awning pitch can be maintained, (not normally)  as to whether the wind out can be left out ,   when the LV is unoccupied or at night,  some pitches that are now non awning   ,were awning pitches   ,but fell foul when the fire break "rules"were tightened .

We will wind in ourThule if weather forecast is not conducive, but always have one end lower to assist with draining water off when raining,

    Hi L G

Weather dictates putting it in, I have had to get up very early a couple of times when the wind picked up over night, just to avoid and damage, seen straps just blowing in the wind, if in doubt put away, agree on the tilt positioning.

Agree with most of the above, especially ALWAYS using storm straps, as a strong wind can blow up suddenly, yes, you CAN leave it up overnight, but if a wind gets up, it can get VERY noisy, stopping you from sleeping. But have only once had wind it in , in my PJ's.

Because of the confusion about Awning/ Non Awning pitches and wind out canopies, I now Always book an Awning Pitch, whether I actually use it or not.

To me a wind out Awning is an essential extra, mine is used mainly as a rain shelter though, good to feed the dog under and keep the rain off the entrance door.

We never leave the canopy out overnight. Mind you, we rarely use it at all so have no need of storm straps.

The time it takes to wind it in ,it’s silly not to , I don’t want to be out at 3 in the morning in my jimmys trying to fight with it if the wind picks up surprised

So how does it work with the people who put a wind break all round their pitch from one end of the van, round the outside of the pitch to the other end?  Surely just a big a risk?

I was at Baltic Wharf last week and the amount of wasted space for the 6m rule was unbelievable, could have just 3m between vans and get twice as many on the site, if you said no awnings etc.  Probably more suited to MH's if they so wish but would give more people a chance to get on but unlikely to happen with the mentality of the club.  Modern vans have electric trips, gas failure devices, fire retardant material etc. unlike in 1960 when the current advice was written where gas lighting was the norm...

At least when they do get pitches they have a decent bit of space with more privacy and the better fire gap👍🏻

But if you are out all day sight seeing why is it needed?  I doubt many people got to BW/RP etc, to sit out and get the sun.  Anyway as I said not going to happen so no need to worry ourselveswink

whilst i agree its never going to happen, BW is basically an aire (with CC toilets and prices....) and doesnt need to be any more than a parking place, probably with a 2/3 day maximim which would allow for a decent turn over..

and, like BW, if youre in the right place for a quick visit, 3m seems like more than plenty to me..

did we feel crowded or unsafe at this very popular stopover....of course not.....and not an awning in site.

the guy in the AT had his door facing me (taboo)... did it worry us? nope.

    TW, something against Bristol?

You just need to keep an eye on weather when using a wind out. OH usually mutters about it will be ok overnight............that’s why he’s always the one who has to get up to wind it back in when wind gets up. Minus Jim jams as well😂.

Bristol is like most cities. Very nice in a few places, rest is ghastly. Except Manchester. Manchester only has two redeeming places, old Trafford Stadium and the Etihad. Everywhere else is unbelievably awful.😱

No idea about the mentality of the club but this caravanner hay no intention of pitching 'cheek by jowl'. Maybe it is therefore simply the mentality of club members? As for people relaxing on site there are some that do - not necessarily all the time. When the temperatures are in the 30s we may return to site around 2am and sit in the shade drinking homemade iced coffees.

No interest in Chatsworth, RP at York or Bristol site.

The door would not worry me either ...... but I generally prefer more elbow space. laughing

Yes, family. I once had this notion of moving to France, but it soon became apparent that we couldn’t leave them behind. It would have felt like we were abandoning them. Our daughter is a single parent.

Not to worry Freddy, I have family in Bristol too and I like it there.

What this has got to do with a motorhome awning I do not know except that I like them as well...laughing

It’s still choice rather than compulsory - just like whether to leave a wind out canopy out at night😃
