Caravan Club Non Insurance Policy

Just as a sequel to my recent claim on the Caravan Club 'policy' - I submitted a claim for the fuel I used to transport the caravan to and from the repairers - which is permitted under their terms and conditions. It was not an insignificant amount since I did a total of 600 miles to Cumbria and back, (twice).
Not only did I submit the claim just two days ago - and received the cheque in this morning's post - but they actually paid more than I had claimed since they calculate costs on a fixed amount per mile rather than the cost of the actual fuel I estimated I used.
I could guess at the sort of response I would have received from other insurers. Well done, CAMC Caravan Cover

Not according to the gentleman that I spoke to this morning.
I spoke with the FOS directly today as I felt that access to FOS was only with regard to the Legal Cover, if taken, or in the event that the CMC could not financially meet a claim when their own Insurers in the event of insolvency would step in to deal with claims. There would then be recourse to FOS but not otherwise. The ombudsman chap that I spoke to was not fully aware of the situation and so read through the CAravan Club COver documents online. Then, after a discussion, he put me on hold whilst he pulled up the file that they had on CMC. He confirmed that after a decision by the CMC directors that there was no recourse to FOS and that such was clearly noted on the FOS computerised file.

The link leads to the Financial Conduct website which says 'The Financial Ombudsman Service may be able to consider a dispute with this firm. Find out how to complain.'
'The Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS) may be able to compensate customers if this firm fails. See how to claim compensation.'The FOS person that looked up the relevant file on CMC confirmed that in the event of a dispute regarding caravan cover they could not act and the CMC directors judgement was final as far as that course.

No I shall not be discussing with the club JVB. I am sure that they are fully aware. I spoke with their insurance dept before taking cover elsewhere. They seemed very evasive on this aspect and unable or unwilling to give me a satisfactory and definitive response. Hence why I finally enquired of the FOS

some folk must be really bored to spend so much time on so much trivia when there is such a simple answer, if you dont like it walk away. I wonder if the FOS has a record of how many cases relating to the CMC have been lodged during the last 20 years

Can't say that I am that interested Rufs. I was purely interested to ensure that my understanding of the situation was correct.
Your question, as I read it was does the FOS have details of cases lodged against CMC in last 20 years. I said 'doubtless'. If there are any they will have been recorded. I suspect that there may well be some - after all some folk are tryers I read one case a few months ago from the FOS case histories where somebody had involved them when an insurance company failed to pay out fully after a caravan theft from a storage facility because the caravan owner admitted not fitting any wheel locks on his twin axle. Guess how that turned out for him!
Thinking further the records on CMC can only go back 2 years+ as they did not offer cover before then and acted only as an intermediary.
As for the sarcastic comment about phoning my friend I don't have one in FOS. Their staff are friendly however

I think three recently (last few months) have posted to say their claim through the club was dealt with quickly and settled in full.
While two have posted to say their non club insurance did not pay out.
So I think that is 5 nil to the club
Although why this thread was resurrected after three and a half months and then actually phoning someone after three and a half months at the FOS is very puzzling. Was there any loose ends to be tied up? Did people need further reminding of their 'error' in choosing the club cover? I think the 'score' so far speaks far more?
Anyway rather than perpetuate this thread I'll retire from it.

Since you are curious Cornersteady I will give you the reason. The reason is that the other day in a related topic on the CaravanTalk forum a poster had responded to another saying that he had spoken to CMC insurance person who had said that he could report to FOS (although apparently not explaining further). The rest I explained earlier and that was that I wished to check out that aspect myself as that is the sole reason why I no longer use CMC Cover. So I decided to go to the horse's mouth lest I had misread the situation. I would have reported the outcome on here whatever it might have been if it provided any clarity.
I hope curiosity is satisfied and that you have a little understanding of my reason for posting on a three (?) month old thread.

I said puzzled not curious ET, two different things in my book.
But on behalf of all I thank you for your endeavours and trying to help everyone in making the right choice for them. I'm not sure it was necessary at all but there you go.
Now I really have to leave this for real.

Hi all,
We've noted the information the Financial Ombudsman Service has given to EasyT and will be following this up with them.
The Builders group insurance policy we have taken out should allow members to access the FOS and to date we know that has been the case, as we have had a couple members use the service and the FOS have responded to them in their usual way.

Seems sensible David. If there is more clarification on this situation it could tempt me back ..... if the assurance is provided by the FOS before next renewal gives me the confirmation as I was reluctant to move from CMC. I shall be interested in developments
Best wishes

I would also add David that if the situation differs from the advice that I received from FOS it is a crying shame that that the situation was not better completely clarified by the CMC. I say this as somebody who has been a supporter of the caravan club for very many years. If the response that I next get, prior to my next renewal date is positive from FOS I shall be delighted but saddened that this change seems to have lacked total transparency at its inception.
