Illegal charging of electric cars

On my travels last year I have seen electric cars being charged from the hook ups on site. This is theft and needs reporting.  I have seen 2 outlets being used by one outfit. One lead to the car and one to the caravan ,one person said it is free, so what, I was only toping it up!.  If this is allowed to continue the genuine members will suffer by much higher prices. or the closure of many sites. Electric Motor homes would need separate charging points.

Have any of you bright sparks got an answer to this?

Exactly so, Easy, and I hope the OP did so when he witnessed the abuse.

The club is going to start charging for EV recharging as has been detailed in the mag and on this site.

Whilst looking for a suitable CL online I noticed one CL that stipulates "no charging of electric vehicles". I wonder how many others stipulate this?

I take you mentioned your observations  to the site staffundecided

As from this month a charge of £2 for HiBrids and £8 for full EVs ,,  is to be applied to anyone wishing to use the site supply     where in the past  there was not a charge  to "top up" but as in the past , it has to be via the LV socket ,  not direct from the EHU bollardwink

This will rely on the member advising  the site staff the days they are charging their vehiclessurprised

May be jumping to conclusions, they we'll may be being charged as per the explained. If they had two leads in separate sockets that would be wrong but a splitter in a single socket?

I didn’t realise that when I joined the CMC I had to go round grassing on other members that might be transgressing the rules undecided , I’m too busy minding my own business and getting on with my holiday cool

It would depend where that splitter was, if in the awning or at the caravan input socket would that be classified as okay? If the splitter was hidden in the awning, who would know?

The bigger picture needs to be addressed.

Assuming that we get to drive EV then how the hell are sites going to provide the extra current. We pull two tonnes around, its not going to be a Nissan leaf. The infrastructure is designed and built for caravans using intermittent 10A (typical) with a low duty cycle. When we all turn up and plug in our 10A charging leads for 5 or 6 hours then the site infrastructure will not cope, the local sub will probably struggle, and who the hell pays for the new cableing and distribution system required.

Just a thought, I am sure the club has taken professional advice as to the massive future infrastructure costs.

Hopefully, if the UK economy is to succeed with such a change there will be garages offering charging facilities rather than the meagre facilities that I have seen thus far. Caravan sites are not the only holiday destinations and most will face the same problem if facilities are not provided off site.

It will be national infrastructure,   that will be having to be improved,  before we get to the stage where it will be a cc site problem,    at our monthly meeting with councillors, they were still at a loss as to how we would be able to charge vehicles in our town,     the majority of houses are terraced with no means of getting supplies to our vehicles

And as for infrastructure,  the new bimode trains with increased power ,going to Edinburgh ,  there is not enough power north of Berwick  to run all the services , so not all can use full power and have to use the diesel engines so as not to overload the national grid this end of the country there has had to be several new sub stations built to get more power from the national grid for the same reasons

We were at Wimpole Estate today and the NT have just completed a new huge car park which has 6 EV hook up points, although none of them were being used during the 4 hrs or so that we were there.

Definitely seeing more charging points now, when out and about. I thought I had  found the perfect spot to get a Mum out of car at our big Tesco but no, it was an EV charging space. Not sure if you get top up points either....🤔😂

I see many that are just token provisions. Those at a Salisbury P&R that we used made me laugh. I think that there were 6 but could have been more. All in use by 9am with hybrids parked there Probably from 8.15am until 6pm whilst their owners are at work.

I know, but that is the whole point. Until adequate provisions are available it is not going to work for EVs. If/when such provisions are available, and the EVs have adequate range for their intended use then charging EVs at home or on site will not present an insurmountable problem although may be a PITA for some compared with the availability of home charging..

That could be readily solved by imposing a punitive charge after a certain period. Just leaving a car plugged in after it is charged would be financially prohibitive.

That would probably stop people leaving battery cars plugged in all day long, but how would those cars get removed from the charger after a few hours when the driver is at work, many miles away? And also, to where would those cars be moved when the P&R is now full?

Hardly practical at a P&R though

    Charging Electric Vehicles (or Hybrids) on a CL site is of growing concern to CL owners;

    1) They feel they should be recompensed for the cost of providing such a service

    2) Their electrical infrastructure might not cope with additional load

The club seems to have found a solution to this dilemma for their Club Sites, and is charging £8/day for EVs and £2 for Hybrids.  I assume this is without metering them.

Unfortunately the club is unwilling to advise CLs on whether the policy they have implemented for Club sites can be rolled out to those CLs that feel able to / have the infrastructure to allow charging.

Can anyone on this forum familiar with the regulations regarding charging EVs or Hybrids please advise?  Should we talk to OFGEM or someone else??

The Cl we use has 16amp EHU, due to some selfish member this year they proposed to install metered EHU, they propose a 10kWh, every extra kWh chargeable.

They have put signage up NO charging of electric vehicles, electric bikes and mobility scooters £2.00 per charge, a bit high but I think they are a bit miffed.

We are there in April and see what has happened, In late May we will take ownership of a new PHEV car, I will have a chat about charging and a fee.

The CMC charge £2.00 and £8.00 is more than fair and reasonable, hopefully no one will abuse it.

I have a similar problem with my caravan battery if the van is on the road when the battery is dead and I cannot get the van up my drive.

To counter that I use my EHU cable to fly the lead over the pavement, at 3 mtrs high, with a connection to the household supply.

Is it not possible to do something similar with your EV?
