Spare tyres

The spare tyres on the car and caravan!

I change my car tyres when approaching 2mm and my caravan tyres every five years. What about the tyres on my spare wheels? Both are kept fully inflated, have had no load and are stored out of the light. Should the seven year guidelines apply?

Many thanks.

My view is - not necessarily but to inspect the tyre and then make a judgement.

If using an older spare, I would drive with caution and get the 'proper' wheel back on ASAP.

I replace caravan tyres at 7 years but I have only done so once in recent years and I did not even consider changing the unused spare as I expected to PX the caravan before the next season.

I change car tyres at 4mm usually but one will swap with the spare.

I would treat a spare with 'age' like as you would a 'space saver' using it with the caution and restrictions. Never kept a unit longer than six years and never replaced tyres. Never had a puncture either. 😳

Tyre compounds are very stable, its sunlight that does the damage. I would still change though due to the fact they do leach over time and I am risk averse sort of person.

You must have money to burn if you're throwing half the tread of your tyres away. At £200+ a corner, I won't throw half of mine away. 🙄

I always put covers on my tyres when the MH is on the drive. If heading somewhere where it would be parked in hot sun for prolonged periods, I'd probably take the covers with me.

Wow! your cast offs are probably being re-sold as "part worn" for £50+ a pop

    Thanks for all the advice.

New spare for the car this year; replace the caravan spare next year.
