Are you going to ask this question with every vehicle. A lot better vehicles out there for towing than the 2 you ask about. Auto every time for me. Depends also on what you are going to tow.

But are they a better choice for other than towing? It does depend on the OP's other requirements for the cars

I’ve had a 2.2 CRV which was a really good now got a 1.6 TDA which tows our coachman 1545kilos with ease, both are manuals.  I’m guessing your taking about the new 1.5’s which I have no knowledge of.  For sure the CRV is bigger than the Sprortage and I believe has a lot more boot space.  Nose weight for the CRV is 100kg

As with all auto boxes just make sure whether or not it needs additional cooling for towing.

We towed with a 2013 Honda CRV manual 2.2 excellent towcar, I am sure the new Honda CRV 1.5 CVT can tow 1500kg

What I did on several occassions when trying to make up my mind re tow vehicles, was get a dealer to supply a demonstrator for 48 hours, one with a tow hook.

IMO that's by far the best way to assess how you and your van will get along with the vehicle.

Given the dire situation dealers are in to move vehicles, getting one should not be too difficult.

I am not sure of the relevance of towing with a previous generation Diesel CRV to a new model petrol hybrid. Personally i wouldnt touch a petrol anything for towing. Whatever Honda and their sales people claim a 1.5 petrol hybrid simply cannot be upto towing what is effectively a big box weighing in the region of 1.5tonnes
