Downsizing

We're thinking about downsizing our caravan, and getting rid of a dreadful Elddis Affinity we've owned since new in 2013. Also considering buying German, as British caravans seem to be of a very poor quality just now. What do members think of the little Eribas? We tour extensively in Europe, everywhere from Austria to Sweden, and know we can live in a much smaller space after a five week tour of New Zealand in a Ford Transit sized camper van!

We have this Eriba for ten years - it's basic, simple, streamlined and fast - and completely solid , robust and leak free. We love it, but most people who tow bungalows on wheels would miss their home comforts.

It must depend to a large extent, to how, where and when you choose to use your caravan.  If you are thinking of using the caravan in warm climates in  the summer then I would of thought that an Eriba Touring range would be perfect as the chances are you will spend all your time living outside and using it somewhere to sleep.   If you want to use it 12 months of the year in colder climates then may be something else would be more practical.  An Eriba Nova? But that would be upsizing not Downsizing.

    Hi Adelaide,

Sorry to hear about your woes with the Elddis.

We're on our second Eriba now. Started off with a Puck L (2nd smallest they do) about 4/5 years ago. Used it extensively for 3 years or so and it was a fantastic introduction to Eriba. Decided we wanted to go a little bigger but still Eriba.

Went down to Automotive Leisure in Poole and spent a long time looking and trying various models, sizes, layouts etc, before deciding the Troll 540GT was our Eriba of choice.

Prices over here are a little crazy - AL currently have a 2006 version for over £15k - and it will sell.

We chose to look around and found one in Denmark for considerably less, so off we went.

Fantastic 'van, as Eurotraveller says 'simple, streamlined and fast - and completely solid , robust and leak free'. It has all we need - huge double bed, separate small dining area, small but neat washroom/toilet, more storage than you'll need, all in a neat package which tows like a dream.

If you can handle the smaller space, then you won't be disappointed.

Good luck in your search - Any other questions, feel free to ask.

Collected our brand new Eriba Troll 540 last week, and are so delighted with it. Built like a small tank, with all hinges, door catches, handles etc made from metal, not flimsy plastic. Really looking forward to life in a caravan that's not a "white box".

How do you set about looking for an Eriba abroad? I noted that it was much cheaper in Denmark

I think you would be better opening a new post asking your question, rather than piggybacking on a 2 yr old post.

Edit, I see that you've opened another post so you could add this query to that one

We went larger then smaller and larger again but have never had anything over around 6.3m whether caravan or motorhome, the smallest we have had is an  Ariva , now on a mid range caravan. Smaller has big advantages in where you can tow and the ease with which you can do it, for us an Eriba would be a bit too small but appreciate the enthusiasm for the build quality. Small is good in weather where you spend most time outside but not for a wet week in the UK.

how can people say they are fast, surely that's down to the tow vehicle undecided.

Indeed it is...although my Eriba does manage to push the 320bhp/650Nm A6 Avant quite nicely...wink
