Marine aquarium
Are there any marine aquarium enthusiasts out there ? We are on our 3rd tropical aquarium at the moment and are venturing into a marine one after a couple of years of research. It was delivered last week and we set it up with a Fluval FX6 canister filter, unfortunately after 1 week we have had to return the filter due to the noise it emitted, the tank is in our living room and it was soooo noisy you could actually hear it upstairs, and that is with clean water in it ( not dirt or grit) as we have not introduced fish yet, so we are back to square one. We need an efficient canister filter for over 300 litres, that runs quietly....a low hum is obviously acceptable but not like the one we have just returned.
We are researching and have spoken to fish keeping places but usually find they advise the ones they sell so not sure how unbiased their opinions are....just thought I would put it out there and see what if anything we get back. We have a couple of alternatives in the top 3 but after Fluval and the cost of them we would like some unbiased opinions of what you have, would not touch, would recommend etc?

There must be a few sites out there for "Fishionadoes" so I'd be very inclined to spent a while checking on there. Also there must be a few Magazines with adverts for such things that might give some guidance.
Sorry I cannot be of more help but my only contact with fishes involves batter, olive oil or spicy tomato sauces

I know very little about marine set-ups, but I used to keep Koi. I’m surprised that the Fluval was noisy given their popularity. It looks to be a decent filter. My advice would be to join a forum that specialises, maybe this one https://www.tropicalfishforums.co.uk/
I used to keep ‘trops’ many years ago, and did at one point consider marines, but I could see the costs spiralling, not to mention the technicalities of keeping the water right.

Or join a local club, OH used to run one in Warwicks. We had several tanks at one stage including marines, it did get noisy and several house moves brought the hobby to an end. Our son still keeps a few fish and OH just enjoys his outdoor pond life etc. Hope you find some enthusiasts to help you.

A good point you make about the size David. When I first got into Koi, I soon learned not to take for granted the stated capacity for any given filter. My last Koi pond was around 2,200 gallons, so I went for a filter rated at 5,000 gallons. As far as I’m concerned, the stated capacity is only ‘up to’, not ideal for keeping well within parameters.

Thanks for all your views....OH has researched no end and we have been on forums....Eheim is a top runner at the moment especially from the noise point of view, it’s really useful to hear what other members have encountered

Happy memories. Before the children came along I kept Malawis and Killies..(Obviously, not in the same tank) I always overspeced the filtration systems too. Children, holidays and lack of house space and disposable income meant giving away both kit and fish. Was quite successful with breeding the Killies, both annual and non-annuals and would loved to gone marine. Hope all goes well.
