New motorhome
Has anyone tried negotiating the price of a new motorhome down? Just read an article on MotorhomeFun about negotiating but get the impression that this is for second hand only. We bought our current motorhome new (6 years ago) at the NEC and got a lot of extras thrown in but I get the impression that this would be harder now. Would be interested to know if there is room for manoeuvre these days. Going to NEC in Feb, only to look (that's what I said last time!)

I know my OH would have a good try if we were in the market for a brand new one but I think he'd settle for 'extras' instead of cash off. Virtually like the shows? Unless you ask at the showroom (s) you'll never know. At the moment it seems that sales folk don't need to try too hard if sales figures are to be believed 😉. I think the bigger issue is the quality of the build, I'd rather pay full price for a non leaking, well constructed, quality fittings etc caravan or motorhome than a 'savings off the price. Not only do the latter cause unnecessary stress and aggravation but loss of holidays in the vehicle and days tied up. Sad 😢
Let us know how you get on.

Can't talk for motor homes but when we changed one of our caravans the part exchange discussed was a nonsense so I used a broker to sell. With the cash in my pocket I went back to the dealer and got a discount of over £1500.00
As it happens the quality of the new van was dire

I suppose it could depend on how much stock the dealer has available. Many motorhomes are only ordered at time of purchase. If you know what make and model you want it might be best to look around the various dealers as some of them advertise offers. There is also the question of whether you want to buy from a dealer near to home just in case of warranty work? 18 months ago we were at the NEC looking at motorhomes and we got hijacked by a dealer who made us an offer on our then motorhome but in reality it was no better than what we got from our local dealer. I suspect you have a greater opportunity for a better deal if you are not part exchanging as the dealer doesn't have to build in any extra warranty allowance on the part exchange so probably has a bit more wriggle room.

If the dealer wants to shift certain models there will be the distinct possibility of getting a better deal ,than if it is a more popular model that can be sold without having to discount, at a show, there will be numerous salespersons hoping to get commission on a sale, but it normally costs dealers quite a lot to be on stands ,so they are a bit more reticent to give big discounts its better to go for add goodies if buying new, but remember that a dealer a long way from your home may not be a good idea if it comes to wanting warranty work done

I spoke to a Carthago dealer only yesterday and he recommended going to the NEC later this month. He said most OEMs chuck in some options at the show to get a deal, but Carthago go out of their way at the show to splash the bigger options and a good deal can be had. But at their prices you might expect more. Regrettably, I will be on my way to Spain during the NEC show, in my old buggy, maybe next time.

Unfortunately Ernie hasn't come up with a big one so no matter how tempting the add-ons....
