Petrol stations near Portsmouth

In June we are again travelling to France with our caravan on the Portsmouth/ Caen crossing. We normally use the daytime crossing and as we travel from the northeast we stay overnight at a site near Fareham where we usually refuel. This year we are travelling on the overnight ferry and we will need to fill up with fuel prior to the crossing. Has anyone any suggestions on petrol station locations which are easy accessible.

Have you checked Google and also Google Earth to view the access?

Rocky, But if you are running late and don't have time to refuel at Portsmouth there is an easy access Esso station just after you arrive in France. About one mile towards Caen from the ferryport at Ouistreham there is a roundabout which gives access to Camping Riva Bella to the left, while the Esso station is on the right. There are 24/24 automated pumps taking UK Credit and debit cards, and a straight drive through with a caravan. In case you are late!

If you don't come off the M275 where signed for the ferry, but keep on it to the roundabout and there do a "U" turn to back track over on the North bound carriageway, there is a Shell, just before the ferry port roundabout.

See Shell station on Google maps at these coordinates:

    50.809725, -1.087186

I have never tried it even without the van but it looks very doable in and out, then you are exiting a few metres from the ferry port entrace.

"Drive" up to it on Google Maps "Steet View", to see for yourself.

The U turn roundabout is at:

    50.805874, -1.087347

If you are arriving at Portsmouth via the M27 there is a large Tesco at Hedge End. The far bank of fuel pumps will allow you to pull straight ahead to exit the fuel station and you will soon be back on the M27. Check it out on Google Earth.

I would qualify what David has said.

It presumes the route to Portsmouth will be from the west via the Southampton area and the M3.
All the options I quote can be quite constructively viewed using Google Maps and their Street View.
I very seriously suggest you do that to satisify yourself of the details.
If using the A34 there is a service station like a motorway type at Sutton Scotney, 20 odd miles off.
If the M3 north of where the A34 joins, there is Winchester M3 services. Both need deep pockets.

The nearest Tesco to Hedge End is off Junction 8 of the M27, on Hamble Lane at Bursledon.

Tesco Bursledon, [ near Hedge End] off M27 Junction 8:

    50.893474, -1.320755.

This IMO has the tighter exit from the pumps. Towing I would not try it on a busy day but believe it is doeable. At rush hours around there things get very snarled up.

The Hedge End Supermarket is a Sainsburys M&S complex. This presents less queuing hassle providing you exit via a tunnel [3 metre headroom], even at busy times.

Sainsburys at Hedge End, M27 Junction 7:

    50.917784, -1.314377
    _______________________________________________________

There is a Sainsburys at East Fareham, this generally has the sharper pricing of all local options.
Sainsburys at East Fareham accessed off M27 Junction 11:

    50.858037, -1.174103

There is a big Tesco store at Paulsgrove/Portchester on the A27, the nearest practical supermarket fuelling option to the ferry port.

Tesco at Portsmouth Paulsgrove on A27 off M27 Junction 12:

    50.845835, -1.097156

There's an Asda in Fareham which is the cheapest around there. It's on Newgate Lane which you can find on Google maps fairly easily and is about 3 miles from the M27 junction you use going from Rooksbury Park

Traffic clogs up even more down there than the other places suggested though. The roundabout at Fareham Quay is not for those of a nervous disposition.

Is that the one under the flyover ... just up the road from the Bird in'th' hand pub (coming from Collingwood)?

Thanks for making the point CY, I bit my lip not wanting to undermine any help being offered.

I would only recommend a trip down into and from Newgate Lane  to somebody who I really wanted to upset and miss their ferrywink.

That's the one, are you still stuck there? Should ease in another hour.

If you want to fill up as close to the ferry as possible there is a Shell garage just south of the roundabout that takes you to the ferry.

So, assuming you enter Portsmouth from the north on the motorway, you follow the signs from the M275 at junction 2 to the ferries, but instead of turning right for the ferry at the first roundabout after the motorway you carry straight on and then do a U turn at the next roundabout just over half a mile further on. You then make your way back north on the A3 towards the ferries and the Shell station is on your left.

It is not more than a mile out of your way in total. Last Friday it was £1.289 for petrol so a bit more expensive than the supermarkets but not out of the woods and worth it in my veiw as it is so convenient for the ferry.

Download the Petrol prices app from https://www.petrolprices.com/. Shows locations of filling stations and where to get the cheapest fuel.

I always fill up with caravan en tow at Tesco store at Paulsgrove/Portchester on the A27..just a few minutes from the motorway.

Plenty of wide space as long as you don't accidentally drive into the Macdonalds instead, which I managed to do last September...

Today's Esso gazole  price there at Ouistreham is €1.39 which is  £1.17p.  Do Portsmouth prices match that ?

Thanks to everyone who has contributed to my question, there are a few to consider, even the one Near Caen.

When we first started going to France via Portsmouth we tried all sorts of Stations. By far the best for us is the Tesco one at Paulsgrove. With it being a night ferry, it is sometimes possible to stop in the main Tesco car park if you arrive too early. Having to negotiate the M25 with its variable traffic issues, we always build in some contingency time and then need somewhere to stop for a while. Hope you have brilliant weather as we are going at the same time.

Thanks to Mr H and Dr Nigel this location seems to be a good option especially if we arrive a bit early.

They must have put something in the water because I did that last autumn as well. I've not got any real excuse as it is my local supermarket. embarassed

If down that way I always fill up at Morrison’s at Horndean, less than half a mile from the A3 and no hassle towing a van
