Land Rover Discovery Sport manual

Totally agree MM
After almost 50 years of owning manuals and 35 years towing with them, two years ago we bought an automatic, it is so much easier and more relaxing towing around towns and dual c/ways etc. Never being in the wrong gear or having to quickly change gear when suddenly baulked by pedestrian or car.
As MM stated I have never known anyone say they would revert to a manual.

Our Sportage auto has a "manual override" that is available when travelling and was used quite often when we had a petrol auto ,but not so now we have the grunt of a diesel, as the kick down is more than adequate if a bit more acceleration is needed when towing ,mostley when entering a busy motorway off the sliproad to match speeds into a gap

I despair of this forum. Someone asks a question about a make of car or caravan and they just get a load of irrelevant replies from people who are not actually able to give an answer but always feel the need to say something. In answer to the original question, I have towed extensively over the last 4 years with a Discovery sport pulling first a Bailey Unicorn and now a Coachman VIP. We love our LR, as does a friend who has one. Excellent tow car, comfortable and practical. However, mine is auto with flappy paddle manual override. I am sure that there are also other excellent tow cars out there but happy with our choice

I’m not sure that people’s opinions are irrelevant as they help build a picture and supply information as you have done even though your car is an auto
However, saying you despair of the forum you choose to use is irrelevant.

That is just your personal opinion not a fact. I too have driven both and in my opinion manual is better but that is just my preference.

All sorts of preferences and prejudices have been aired - but so far no one has answered the original question. Any takers?

I will give you that one and that's the only plus side for an auto, ease of driving but you need a manual for having fun.

I suspect that comes down to ones take on “fun”, but probably has overlooked the paddles for those times you want to get involved and think you can outsmart the auto's intelligence.
I totally agree with the auto boxes of old being left in the showroom but the latest are IMO brilliant, unquestionably my choice for towing a caravan, though if in the mood and not travelling far happy to take the nippy Golf manual.

All this about number of gear changes. To strive for low emissions, gear boxes now-a-days have oh so many gears (eight for forward in my Land Rover) that it would become time consuming to change as much as needed. When there was four, the changes were half as frequent.
I was offered a drive in both models at the Discovery Sport launch but before that happened I had discounted buying one when I found the second row seats could not be folded down flat. So just ate the dealer's fancy sandwiches and stuck with a real Discovery.

I have the 2013 Sorento auto, it has been in eco mode since the day i bought it and i only ever use drive and reverse for moving around, never used kick down, i seem to recall sales guy showing me how to use it in manual , but never felt the need, used to be a LR user but would not go back.

I used to tow with a 'SType' 2.7 twin turbo diesel auto, one of the last ones built, 2008, and to say auto's aint fun, well stick that thing in sports mode and floor it, twice the motorway speed limit soon flashed by, bit light on the bum for towing so swopped it reluctantly for a Freelander 2 with the XF 2.2 diesel engine in it, auto of coarse like others wouldn't have anything else,my second Landrover and love it to bits I put the back seats down and chuck the awning two folding E bykes gas Barbie and a small mut and his bed, and I think the disco sport was the model that followed the Freelander, great tug..
