Board Games and Favourite Toys!
Christmas always reminds me of board games. As children, we knew that one of our shared presents would be a new board game, or something similar that we could enjoy with family and friends. We still occasionally play nowadays if we have family and friends around, although some of the games have been updated!
We got the old favourites such as Monopoly, Cluedo, Mousetrap, but I do recall some slightly more unusual ones, such as Escalado, Haunted House, and one we certainly still have, Escape from Colditz.
Anyone recall other favourites, or toys that they have never forgotten and perhaps still treasure?

Never really into Board Games as a child. Use to play Monopoly with the boys when they were younger and they always won even without me letting them!!! About a year ago someone showed me how to play dominoes and I seemed to win every game which was unusual for me, more due to observation and maths!!!

My Grandad taught me Dominoes, Fives and Threes! Not sure if there are other Domino games, but it’s the only one I remember.🙂

We had hilarious fun playing an adapted version of 'Pop-up-Pirate' on one of our boats - after dinner with friends. Basically, you had to answer a nautically-themed question (and I used to come up with some diabolical ones). If you got it right - you were able to remove a dagger from the barrel. But if you got it wrong - it was 'two fingers' of the drink you were drinking. Obviously, the game became more stupid as the night wore on - but great fun

At Christmas, depending on numbers we resort to Bingo (there's always someone with a big voice who likes calling the numbers!) We also do pass the parcel and smoke everyone out with indoor fireworks (they're pretty awful.) Other games depending on effort required or children wanting to do them.

I used to love Board games. One of my favourites was a game based on Thor Hyeredahl's expedition.It was called Kon Tiki. Educational at the same time. We used to have the Colditz game. There was Mine a Million, Totopoly (horse racing game), Mousetrap.
As there were 4 kids in the house it was always a tradition at Christmas for us to gang up on our parents. I remember the times fondly.
I recall one Christmas when I was about 10 getting a box set of 50 board games such as Ludo, Dominoes etc. Hours of fun.

We have a railway based travel version of that in our MH brue! One flat six inch tin, inside shows map of British Isles, one dice, four counters, four line block magnets and two sets of cards, destinations and hazards! We have had hours of devious strategy and fun playing with this.
We got creative presents as well, I can remember my sister having a Chemistry Set, complete with a little Meths burner. We used to grow crystal gardens with this (might be Cobalt?). Plastercast for making small casts of things, and a set that used resin for encasing favourite things like shells, coins etc... and making them into keyrings.
Still got an old Spirograph, I think there’s something similar on Pinterest adverts at the moment.....😁

I remember we had one where you were a budding entrepreneur and had to build the infrastructure of the UK by buying land from farmers or whoever. Huge board but again it was quite educational. I seem to recall it had a "Bribe the Planning Dept. Manager" card.
We were just talking about Spirograph the other day. My sister received it one Christmas.
My parents were not well off but we did enjoy Christmas time and were spoilt rotten. Happy times.

Same here WN, one hardworking Dad, one creative Mum, house full of love. Nice presents at Christmas, and a loving family around us. We were lucky.

Monopoly used to be a firm favourite in my youth. Also played Colditz a few times. That used to be good fun. We'd all gang up on my dad who played the commandant role.

A not forgotten toy. My grandparents called me into their darkened bedroom early one Christmas morning and they had turned on the little battery lights in a small two up, two down dolls house, I thought it was wonderful! (We had fairly low key Christmas presents so that was a real treat.) My grandfather, born in Victorian times used to make a decorated container, usually involving crepe paper etc, I can remember a boat one year, he filled it with small individual presents for everyone.

Mum was a great maker of presents. She did me a Knight’s Castle one birthday, all DIY, but parents had bought me the Knights and horses to go with it. Played with it for hours at a time.

Late entry: My favourite board game as a boy by far was Formula One. I liked it because, if I am remembering it correctly, it was one of the few board games that did not rely on the throw of a die.
Monopoly, Cluedo and Totopoly also featured in my childhood but never since - not really a board game fan.
I always used to say they were aptly named!!

Always played Scrabble with my in laws on Boxing day, a couple of years ago dad said heres a festive word, we looked on in anticipation, his offering was SEX, lots of laughing and blushes, sadly he passed away recently, I don't think Scrabble will ever be the same again
