Elizabeth is Missing
BBC 1 tonight. A hard watch but a quite riveting performance by Glenda Jackson, former star of Women in Love, an MP for some years and now in her eighties. Its based on a book by Emma Healey. The main character is Maud (Glenda Jackson) who is struggling with Alzheimer’s. The story revolves around two time periods, one when she was young when her sister went missing and the second in the present day when she can't find her friend. In many ways its the difference in the sharpness of mind that she can remember what happened when she was young contrasted with the confusion and anger of not being able to remember what is happen in the present time. It is not an easy watch and for those you have had love ones who suffered the same condition it will be quite poignant.

A bit of a harrowing watch. A caravanning friend from our local church has recently had to place his wife in a nursing home, having struggled with her increasing dementia over the past couple of years. Depressing to think that it may be hitting some of us at some stage.

I remember recommending the book on the "good reads" section.
I thought it was superbly done - very harrowing for anyone who's had to watch a relative suffer from that dreadful disease and certainly darker, as far as I can recall, from the book which had many humorous interludes. An excellent performance from the two leading actors.
It's the sort of thought-provoking drama which the BBC does so we'll, just like the earlier one on the same theme with Alison Steadman in the leading role.
For anyone who hasn't seen it, do try and catch it on iPlayer - there won't be many better ways of spending 90 minutes!

Not an enjoyable watch at all but compelling and thought provoking non the less. Like many others we have experience of this awful condition in our family. My memory isn't quiet what it was either. Aspects of this growing old thing are not brilliant I'm afraid. Live life now!

Haven’t seen it yet, but will based on recommendations here. Like many, also have personal experience of watching my MIL slowly succumb and die. Same situation now with my own mother aged 89. I’ll be interested to see how it deals with the emotional and financial stress created for all concerned.

Very difficult viewing for me as its not long since my Mum who suffered with Dementia died.
I thought it was the best I'd seen dementia portrayed, so many programmes try and get it totally wrong.
Last nights programme was heart wrenching but an excellent performance by Glenda Jackson.

I couldn't watch it due to my late Mum and her memory loss although it wasn't Alzheimer's it was similar. I do hope the story gave some insight.
If anyone is struggling with a family member I found the Alzheimer's society web site very helpful, in fact I and my sister had printed sheets to remind us how to respond in certain situations and although always out of sight they were a good back up.

As a person who hasn't had the experience of a family member with Dementia I found the play a very interesting watch, beautifully acted. Would definitely recommend it.

If, like me, you were planning on watching this on iPlayer and you’re unlucky enough to own a Samsung ‘smart’ TV, be aware that BBC have made some recent changes to iPlayer which are not supported by Samsung software so it doesn’t work anymore. Seems that my 5 year smart TV is now a dumb TV! Thank you BBC, bloody annoying!
Still available on the iPad tho.

We had this problem with our Sony Smart tv, I was recommended to switch off the tv at the mains for 10 mins, then switch back on. The tv would then go through the setup procedure a bit like a reboot.
It worked for us, so may be worth a try if you haven't already done so.
Sorry for going off thread.

Thanks, but I’ve tried all the recommended fixes including resetting the smart hub which has always worked in the past. The BBC have openly declared what they’ve done and admit incompatibility with some older Samsung TVs. Absolutely no success contacting customer support at Samsung (5 hours and waiting for ring back call)!

Have you seen this? https://www.samsung.com/uk/support/tv-audio-video/bbc-iplayer-software-update/

Thanks David
Tried that also, TV confirms I’m using the latest software, but iPlayer still not working - loads up ok, then freezes. I’ve spent a lot of time on this today but made no real progress. My TV isn’t one of those listed either. Still waiting for Samsung Customer Services to call me back - 14hours and counting!

Persevere Bill. We have just had similar issue. Our old Samsung wouldn’t let us into the update mode. So after cursing and swearing at it (therapeutic, but otherwise useless🤣) we just turned it off, left it for a few minutes, turned it back on and then it started to upload update.🤷♀️

Apparently my software is up-to-date, but I’ve made no progress at all with Samsung customer service. However, I’ve discovered a ‘work around’ which kind of solves the problem. I’ve purchased a Google Chromecast (£20) which allows me to play my iPad through my Samsung TV using the HDM1 port. Works ok using iPlayer on my iPad. Found that fix on ‘mumsnet’!
ITV Hub and All4 Player still work ok, it’s just BBC that creates the problem.

There is more information here https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-50747526 It seems that it is Samsung who have not updated the security certificates that are required to access the BBC iPlayer. One way round it is as Bill has discovered to use a third party device to circumnavigate the issue. We tend to watch TV through our Humax box rather than directly through the TV (not a Samsung). We do this because we are always recording programmes so it makes finding them easier from the same platform.

Finally got through to Samsung today.... new software works ok on some models, fix in progress for others (mine) and for some older models fix will never be available. This experience has put me off any future Samsung purchases.

Getting back to the original post I watched this over the weekend and found it enjoyable and compelling viewing.

Done all that to death with no improvement. My problems started with messages like yours, have you checked if your iPlayer works? It will load up ok, give you all the catch-up programme options, but then when you select what you want to watch, it just freezes for a while then gives you an error message. You can set your Samsung TV to auto update software, so should all happen without you knowing.

Finally got to see this tonight using my new Google gizmo.
Outstanding drama - well done BBC. It was obviously written by someone with deep, personal experience of a close family member with dementia. The stuff with scrappy lists everywhere is spot on, absolutely what my mother does, sometimes writing quite distressing things.
