Looking for stop over

We will be trying Black knowl in the New forest later next year, we will be travelling from East Cheshire and not sure which route to take, l was thinking of doing M6, M5 stopping at the Tewksbury site, from their i was thinking of doing Swindon, Marlborough and on to Salisbury then onto Brockenhurst'. The other route that l thought of doing which is probably more straight forward is the M6, M6Toll, M42, M40, A429 to Morton in the Marsh. then head for Swindon and onto Salisbury then Brockenhurst. l have done the Tewksbury one with the caravan missing the toll road and using the M5 but now we have the Motorhome l thought it would be the better route and more pleasant, obviously there would be the cost of the toll not sure how much it is for a motorhome, l know the club doesn't get a special rate anymore. Any one who has done both routes or indeed others could you let me know your thoughts would be greatly appreciated

    The beauty of a MH is that you don’t need to take the shortest/most direct route but can meander and take in the sights along the way. There’s no need to stick to m/ways at all if you don’t want to. 

    In your shoes I would try to avoid Salisbury if possible as it always seems to have traffic jams in all directions.

    Thanks Tin wheeler will look to bypass it, one reason we want a stopover is the wife has a jippy back it tends to play up on long journeys 120 to 150 is about as much as she can do

    From Cheshire via Shrewsbury, Hereford and Gloucester - halfway point there overnight at Briarfields Motel Campsite, flat hard standings ideal for motorhomes. Situated midway between Gloucester and Cheltenham with buses to both.

    Thanks for that Eurotraveller done that route when we did ludlow last year its ok if you are west cheshire but we are east cheshire and on the verge of Derbyshire but thanks for the info will still have a look at it on the map

    You could try (from the M6 toll) the M42/M40 and stop off at Warwick, then follow the Fosse Way towards Cirencester. Onwards to Warminster (for Longleat) Shaftesbury and Blandford Forum. Then head onto the A31 towards the New Forest. Several stops available and a more pleasant route than the motorways and I too would avoid Salisbury. One other  thing, there are often long delays through Lyndhurst so with  your motorhome you could leave the A31 and head for Brockenhurst via Burley. 

    Thinking about it there are lots of interesting ways down to the NF! Hope you enjoy your travels.

    Brue that sounds good will take a look not sure when we are going mid May or late October, planning well in advance

    Depending on the size of your MH, I would caution the use of the A350 Shaftesbury to Blandford. It is a scenic route but very narrow and winding through some of the lovely villages. I towed our c/v on one occasion and it was “buttock clenching” in places !
