Cushions refilled
After much use my Unicorn Seville 2015 is in need of some new foam in the cushions and backs Has anybody had this done, if so where is the best place. Have tried some new caravan cushions and they are like boards, not what we want. We want supportive sleeping when cushions turned over, and comfortable sitting. Your help appreciated. Mick

The bench seats in my Bailey motorhome had a tag with the name of the makers so might yours have the same? They might well know the correct size for your model and year? Likewise the Club Magazine often has adverts for recovering and other upholstery services. My understanding is that caravan/motorhome cushions feel hard because of the use of fire resistant foam? I seem to remember the first new caravan we got after the new regs came into force there was a marked difference in firmness.

We had a problem with our 2015 Barcelona in that the seat cushions were far too soft and after a week away - and continuous use, they became flattened and uncomfortable. I could have had them changed under warranty but that would only have been a like-for-like replacement and it wouldn't have solved the problem.
I took them to an upholsterer in Bridlington who specialised in caravan upholstery (probably not much help to you, but you must have similar companies near you) and for £250, he filled both seat bases with top quality foam and the problem was solved. Plus the job was completed in 48 hrs.
He told me that it was a common problem with new caravans since manufacturers were using the cheapest foam and it was a sort of honeycomb construction, presumably to save weight. The new bases were much heavier than the original, however.
It's interesting that Bailey are now advertising their 2020 models as having interior sprung seat bases, which is what we have in our present Knaus.

Hi, I presume that the 'originals' were OK for you so maybe worth seeing if can replace with like for like. I replaced the complete cushions, one one front seat, this year on my Lunar and was pointed to Bellfied, as the OE manufacturer, by I think, EasyT.
If you give them a call they can tell you if they made the originals and the options to replace. They were very helpful, efficient and just two thirds of the price the dealer quoted.

There are lots of reupholstery places up and down the country. What you need to do is specify which type of foam insert you require, as there are different grades. Some are sleep quality, some are seating quality, some are the cheap tat used by caravan manufacturers. I would recommend you actually go along and lay, or sit on different grades to get an idea of comfort and spring back, as body weight can be a factor. Once chosen, it needs to be wrapped in an extra comfort layer to give it a further lift. 🙂

Our 2012 Bailey MH had spring interior seats made by Bellfield. They were very comfy both as seats and beds. We had the MH for 6 years it was in use for around 8 months of the year so plenty of wear. Still like new when we PX it.
The new Coachman caravan has all foam seat bases, also by Bellfield we find them comfy but I doubt they will last as long as the sprung ones.

I have followed Richard and ros suggestion and found a upholstery company near by and they are going to look at them for me. Things don't seem to last nowadays. I have caravanned for 47 years and the new vans I have purchased in the 10 years wouldn't last too long with a lot of use.

March 2019 swift elegance 650 and seat bases been back to Belfield for repair/replace after 8 days. Got back and after another 8 day stay now going back again for same reason. foam keeps collapsing. £32000 caravan and cheap nasty foam.

Thanks for replies. Cushions are going to Bellfields tomorrow to have them interior sprung. Very nice helpful company to deal with. Look forward to comfortable nights when they come back.

report to your dealer as Belfield will pick up from them. been told that Belfield are a very good company to deal with and when the cushions go wrong twice they tent to upgrade the foam. will wait and see on that one as mine are there at the moment.

Our 2016 Bailey Pegasus has the "dream sleep"seating system which when we first used it although very comfortable, had "problems" with how it was to be used, the seat backs are not required when making up the singles or double bed, after several "conversations!!"With both Bailey and Belfield ,we were sent a complete set of "modified"seat bases,we did not notice any differences but it now means that we can "rest"one set, which we do after each tour

I reported it at the time. When I took it back to the dealer for new brakes, they were supposed to take a picture of the cushions for a warranty claim. Unknown to me, they didn’t, I just assumed it was all ‘in hand’. They now want a photo to support any claim. That will have to wait until we next use the van (next week hopefully) as the cushions have (over time) largely sprung back. Out of interest, do they replace the whole cushion or just refill it?

much the same with my 2008 Coachman which I still have, it was kitted out by Leisure furnishings of Nottingham still going strong if a little sun faded, we do use a very thin memory foam mattress as a topper now, but seats especially in the rear are still very firm.

Had my cushions back from Belfields today after being refilled with sprung interiors. Now in the van and we both find them very comfortable to sit on and not as firm as firm filled cushions. Will try them out soon for sleeping. A very good service from Belfield from start to finish.

Yes I did. I had quotes for re-filling with foam up to £750. Had a quote from Bellfield for the sprung seats at £200 plus express delivery charge. They refill your old cushion covers. Very good service and pleasant to deal with.

Many thanks for reporting back, the price was very good for the amount of pieces you had done.
We have used Bellfield before twice now, our last 2 vans we had them remove the knee rolls from the bottom cushions. I agree a good company to deal with.
I think we might give them a call to see how much they would charge to change ours to spring interiors.
Are the new ones much heavier than the foam ones?

Hi Tammy. Yes they are but not excessively heavy. I feel its a small amount for the extra comfort they give.

I've just asked Bellfield for an indicative quote for refurbing our vintage upholstery on our recently acquired 2004 Swift Charisma 230 Jura Touring Caravan. Having just returned from an 89 night trip to Spain, I know where all the weak spots are on the seating and sleeping areas ...
So far, the cost of ownership [assuming that the caravan was scrapped for no value] is sitting at £37.80 per night after spending some £275 on a new door lock, LED lighting and resealing the bathroom vent. Refilled upholstery should be a decent investment and keep the van in 'faded elegance' condition alongside the campaign scars and dinks from previous owners' trips
