It’s quite weird but so was the book and way ahead of its time.

    Good SFX I thought.

I'm wondering if three episodes is not "an episode too far". I watched "Independence Day" the other evening, not having seen it before. Tongue in cheek chewing gum version of a similar plot line but enjoyable for all that.

I didn't expect to enjoy it, but was pleasantly surprised. Whether the standard will be maintained over 3 episodes remains to be seen. I reread the book a couple of years ago before reading Stephen Baxter's sequel "The Masacre of Mankind". HG Wells was truly years ahead of his time!

I share MM's assessment. Disappointing and also used to make a point of someone's view of our colonial past.

hopefully going to Spain for a few months early next year, so i might just spend a few hours reading the book just so that i can form an opinion as to how bad or good the drama was, but the ending did leave me a little confused.undecided

I agree it turned out to be a disappointment overall - some good special effects and a couple of good acting performances but basically so far removed from the original story as to be meaningless.

It’s on our catch up list. The book is excellent, something worth re reading. Anyone else recall the Jeff Wayne Musical version that was released decades ago? We actually have the vinyl album. Has the marvellous Richard Burton as the narrator. Well worth a listen.

Excellent album, definitely much better than the latest TV adaptation.

I seem to recall Jeff Wayne did a couple (?) of live shows, performing WotW’s. There was a large screen behind showing Richard Burton speaking the narrative, as he did on the album. Obviously, it was done digitally, but ‘‘twas very good. A show I would have liked to have seen, if I’d known at the time.

We lifted our vinyl copy of War of the Worlds out but couldn't listen as player is in a 'safe' place 🤔. Even as I type I can 'hear' Burton's voice and words and the dramatic music. Certainly worth a listen. Not read the book since I was a teenager, a decade or 2 ago 😂😂. Vague recollection of a film, American probably, several years ago which didnt match my recollection of my own mental images! That happens so often, I avoid films of books - I am enjoying the adaption of Philip Pullman's dark materials trilogy so far, but the author was heavily involved in the adaption. Sorry wandered off topic.

Can't say that I was impressed with the 3 part series, it seemed to be at least 1 part to long. The ending was a bit flat to. Haven't read the book but the tv production didn't do it for me.

Not sure, but I think the live show is still going. With different artists/actors.

RB has/ had a voice like liquid gold, superb at readings and radio adaptations. Such a charismatic actor as well. Made some good films, and the odd bit of dross, but always worth watching😁

I think one of the most significant things about WoW was the 1938 radio broadcast in the US when thousands of people thought it was a real invasion😱😫

Have to admit I rather liked the TV adaptation , taking it to the apocalyptic ending was certainly a different angle. Saw the live show a few years back at the O2 arena , when Justin Hayward was in it , there was a CGI image of Richard Burton narrating, spooky but very spectacular .😀.

I would stick with the book AD, and try the musical version if you want a different telling of the tale.

Just watched the first episode. Frankly, I found it abysmal. There’s little tension, the actors seem to spend most of their time gaping open mouthed at next to nothing, and the made up sub plot is adding nothing to the story. A waste of a decent cast to be honest.🙁
