Sharks and bodgers
I have to say I have met some very helpful and nice people in my short caravaning experience.
However as a tradesman who moved over to the horse industry I have to say I haven't met as many sharks and bodgers in my life.
The horse industry is renowned for selling duds but the caravan industry really surpasses them by a clear furlong.
As for bodging that has been taken to a whole new level.
I have been shocked by the lies and levels of ineptitude displayed in the used caravan industry and wouldn't trust most to make a wooden horse trough.

Twas ever thus, Baymare. The whole LV industry should be ashamed of itself and standards slide lower year on year. ☹️

Some of the utter crap I have looked at by recognised sellers needs investigation by trading standards, it just wouldn't be allowed in the horse industry or the building industry. I have seen bridges so obvious to my eyes that would not pass muster.
These people are cheating ordinary hard working folk out of hard earned money and getting away with it, they rely on their lack of knowledge it's an absolute sin.

That’s as maybe but Baymare started this thread to talk about the appalling standards in the LV industry. What others do does not excuse the sloppy standards of build quality by LV manufacturers or the shoddy treatment of customers by dealers.
Baymare, I fear we all must bear some responsibility for letting the perpetrators get away with it because we keep buying the stuff they turn out.

It's not about picking fights it's about protecting honest men and women from bloody awful standards. I readily admit I was in an industry that had some bloody awful standards but they have improved with regulation through constant reporting and checking. I think there needs to be some standards applied to the caravan industry both new and used. I read stories of caravans having leeks and damp at two years old. That is not a standard that's abuse.

Of course you’re right, Baymare, and wouldn’t it be good if the major clubs lobbied the industry on our behalf?
I've watched things go from bad to worse over the years but nobody does anything about it. Any suggestions?

Apart from those who fail to read posts then just jump in with their strange take on things , i think as you say regulation has tried to improve standards but then as I think we all know we only have to look at Grenfill tower in London and the terrible lack of fitting fire regulation parts of new houses to see it still happens

The "good" thing here baymare is that in your "short caravaning experience", you have twigged the situation.
So many of us in the hobby, here in the UK buy van after van, motorhome after motorhome in the vain hope the next one just somehow will be a bit better than the one they are dumping.

Yes the reality of caravanning can be so remote from the glitzy appearance at the NEC show! It is all so superficial. But when you actually start using your shiny new expensive caravan you can start to understand the dreadful drawbacks of the leaks and shoddy workmanship. Yet we all still do it...!

Not all, our van was built in 1984. Structurally, it is sound. We are just giving the interior some TLC. Superficial stardust seldom lures us in.
Are you talking Equine duds baymare? Those that go over the Pennines with their breeding papers swopped? Or horsebox/trailer duds? 😁

Just goes to show the differences we have had great service from Dometic with a problem with the fridge in out c/van,also with Bailey and their customer service and never found a problem with cc "ltd",but then like any company they all have less than competent staff ,until weeded out

Doesn't bode well for Kampa, then - since they were bought out by Dometic last November.Always been delighted by Kampa products - across the range - Dometic, on the other hand - utter rubbish.

Dometic. Dometic is a product brand by Dometic Group. Dometic was established as a brand in the US in 1968 by Electrolux Leisure Appliances, by that time a part of the Electrolux Group. In 2001 Leisure Appliances was divested to EQT Partners and Dometic was selected as company name.

Latest MH fitted with Dometic toilet - rubbish. Prone to leaking seal and requires copious amounts of silicone spray to remain in useable order!

When we bought our latest van we had some problems and the dealer was absolutely useless so I did a check on the company (too late I know) only to find they had moved from selling secondhand cars to caravans, thankfully they have now closed down
