Electric bikes insurance

We have purchased 2 folding electric bikes for use primarily when we are caravanning. They will probably be kept in the car when we are in the caravan, but the car contents insurance is only up to £250 max.

our home buildings and contents insurance will cover the bikes when at our home location almost to their combined value, so don’t want to duplicate this cover.

our caravan is insured through the club, but without checking, similar to the car, I would doubt it would cover personal effects to this value.

has anyone had experience of getting insurance on high-value individual items e.g electric bikes, for when travelling or pitched in the caravan?

any help or advice appreciated.

Are you sure that you have caravan insurance with the club or only caravan cover

Yes, check your Caravan Policy and documents carefully if with Club.

OH has seriously expensive e bikes, (one is price of a small car😱) so we use a reputable and specialist company called Pedalsure. They do all sorts of insurance, not just bikes. Found them a good company, thankfully never had to make a claim.

Edit: top tip is make sure you keep all receipts for bikes and anything you add to them such as personalised pedals, seats, lights, carriers, etc....and take photographs as evidence, just in case. We were unfortunate to have two bikes stolen from home (not e bikes) but our insurance paid out for everything as we had all our receipts logged, and photographs of bikes. They even gave us a cash sum to replace damaged garage doors. Insurance loss adjusters love honest, organised claimants!

Agree DD, specialist cover might not be required, just adding information to house policy can sometimes suffice.

We had cover for our ebikes, OH found plenty of companies who do bike cover on line.

Our home insurance wouldn't cover them due to the value of the bikes.  Our older folding ebikes were covered by the house insurance.

Thanks to all for your input. Photos and documents all on file; and bikes chained to floor anchor in garage.

Our caravan standard cover with the CMC won't cover electric bikes, and it sounds as though this applies to all levels of cover.

I phoned Pedalsure and they are phoning me back. Cycleguard are another who receive good reviews.

Our home buildings and contents will cover them as named items, but the additional cost is £300+ pa. This would cover them away from the home. Our present policy will cover garage contents up to £5000, hence my query as to whether insurance covering only caravan holidays, i.e. away from the home, can be arranged.

It looks as though we may have to go with a 'normal' policy covering in the home and away.

    Thanks again.

Our bikes and Thule carrier are insured on the house insurance policy including cover away from the home. They're not folding bikes but Halifax Insurance cover them provided they are locked to an immovable object when not in use which they have confirmed includes the touring caravan when we are on site. LV=, the previous insurer also covered them in the same way so look at moving your home insurer.

The extension to include bikes can't have cost that much in the premium as the total for contents including these only comes to just over £100

    A bit late for this.

Halifax Home Contents and Buildings Insurance, £164.67, £50 cashback taken out Feb of this year, but premium may well change next year although doubt bike cover will.

Named electric cycles, 2 x Merida electric bikes valued at £2500 each with £250 excess, allowed a maximum of 60 days away from home at any one time. Must be permanently locked to a fixed structure when not in use.

When I purchased them and looked at specialist cover, it ran into the hundreds.

I have just renewed our Halifax cover after receiving the £50 cash back last year. Premium, after taking into account the £50 increase was virtually the same as last year and the cost of cover for the bikes, as you say, was extremely competitive. The premium did go up by a bit more than the final renewal premium was agreed at. A phone call and polite discussion was all that was needed.
